Myth Be Gone!

By
Home Stager

There is this persistent myth that Staging is about fluffing pillows.

The myth leads people to think Stagers do only finishing touches in a decorative vent.

People  believe that if their home is professionally decorated, Staging is not needed.

The myth keeps people from tapping into a valuable resource.

By getting a Staging consult you will get an impartial view of your home.

Yes there will be decorative tips involved.

Your Stager will look at colors, furniture placement, accents and traffic flow.

The consult will help you edit furnishings, collectibles and general clutter.

But more importantly your Stager will tell you some home truths that could affect your sale. Things that your relatives, friends and even your Realtor may be uncomfortable about saying.

Your Stager will tell you if:

  • the paint colors you chose will narrow your buyer pool
  • there are minor repairs necessary
  • the door entry set looks shabby
  • the windows need washing
  • the shingles need replacing
  • the eaves troughs need attention
  • the driveway and walkway need work
  • the shrubs are overgrown
  • the flooring needs cleaning/replacing
  • the house is cluttered with 'stuff'
  • the house smells of pet, damp, spices, sweaty teen
  • taps, sinks, counters should be updated
  • the lighting fixtures should be changed

You see your Stager is there to help you market your home. Your Stager sees a product with an unemotional eye, not your home.

Once you have the consult you can look at your budget and move forward. If you have to make choices your Stager will help you prioritize the work to be done.

Your Stager can do as much of the work for you as you wish.

Get a plan for preparing your home for sale from top to bottom and move on with your life.

Janice- this is such a good post and I hope everyone reads it.  I think most every home could benefit from a staging consultation, regardless of price point.  It's not just about "fluffing pillows" but more about getting the house in a marketable postition.

Stagers wear many hats.  I don't think home sellers realize what an asset a stager can be.  We go way beyond fuffing!

Thanks Kathy. Staging is about Marketing.

I do too Kathy!

Yes we do Cindy! We have to keep educating the public about the advantages of using a stager.

Janice,

Sometimes you need an independent opinion. There are problems but they are often overlooked by the homeowner.

That's very true Malcolm.

That's right Brian. Owners are used to their home and no longer see possible issues for buyers.

It's true...we are a misunderstood profession.  It's important for sellers to have professional advice when preparing their product for sale....home staging is marketing, not decorating.

SUGGESTED!!

Janice, you are GREAT!!

Too many people hear the term "Home Staging" and assume a Stager's job is all glamour, shopping, and decorating touches.

Way back in the day, there were people who helped in Real Estate sales who were actually called "Fluffers".

I was watching an old episode of "The Stagers" today, and was furious when one "Stager" told the camera crew, "Take a look at this old stained carpet. I am simply using this enormous area rug to cover that up. That is what we Stagers do is cover up issues so that buyers do not notice them."

Arghhh. Professional Home Stagers DO NOT MASK, HIDE, or COVER UP issues!!!

However, we ARE there to point those issues out to the seller, address them, and help the seller to find an appropriate repair/fix/solution to the issue.

And, you are so right. Friends, Families, and Realtors(R) don't have to be brutally honest with the seller when we are invited into the picture. This is what we do! We help take that burden off of all of the people in the sellers' lives who are invested in maintaining relationships with them!

Great post!!

Janice this post deserves, and gets a SUGGEST from me.  Sometimes the smallest details will catch a buyers eye and make them think...."now this is the house for me."  Great job!
