What Golf's greats can teach Realtors

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

I took a class last week and the instructor spoke about the importance of having a mentor or a coach to be a true top producer.  He spoke about golf and quoted many articles in which Tiger Woods was quoted as saying why he uses a coach to continue to hone his incredible swing and remain the top golfer in the world.

At one of the breaks I told the instructor that speaking of golf I have always admired Vijay Singh.  Vijay has been known to win golf tournaments and then after the tournament he hits the driving range and will practice until dark.   Most golfers will celebrate with a dinner, drinks, etc. while Vijay is at the practice range working to get better and better even though he just won a million dollars!

Over the years I can't tell you how many times in my career I have seen Realtors have a good run and close several transactions in a week or two and stopped doing the things they needed to keep doing while they were collecting commission checks. They are scrambling to take care of their closings and almost always these Realtors will follow their great success with a lull of a month or so and they don't know what happened.

I think we can all learn from Tiger and Vijay.  Many of us will hit streaks where we will have several closings in a row.  Just like Vijay we need to keep prospecting continuously to keep the pipeline of clients coming in. We also need to keep honing our skills with all the education we can get.

I try to go to every seminar and class I can go to which are not required by our real estate commission.  If I can learn just one thing from each seminar or class it is one more thing I didn't know the week before.  Continuing to do the things day in and day out even when things appear to be going well is what develops SuperStars.

George.. my friend.. I'm afraid this is one time I must disagree and I am a golfer.. VJ  plays a good.. sometimes almost great  game and he may spend many hours in practice but I believe  he has many lessons to learn about the spirit of the game and life.  I suspect this is what will always separate him from the truly great golfers..

Kaye - You are entitled to your own opinion my friend.  I too am a golfer and I respect Vijay for his work ethic as many of his peers and sports writers do.  P.S. You want to tee it up sometime as a friend?

It is so easy to rest and relax when we have several closings, rather than kick it up a notch! Thanks for the push!! :)

Vijay always goes back to the driving range whether he wins or not! He's the one golfer that always goes back. We had the ladies here for an LPGA event and it was breathtaking to watch the ladies in person. So many of them would take 5-10 minute breaks to come over to say hello and sign autographs. Annika Sorenstam was the one to go back over to the driving range and putting green after playing 18. And she was with her caddie and coach. Translate that to real estate....

Sherry - That is wonderful that you had the opportunity to witness the ladies from the LPGA.  I have always marveled at Vijay's work ethic as you say "Win or lose".  This is why he is one of the best in the world and never had anything handed to him and never takes it for granted.  We can all learn from him.  Have a great evening and thanks for sharing.

Hi George,
You have hit on a profound truth here, I call it the "patting on the back time".  I believe it is ok to do that but some people just extend that time a little long.  Thanks for helping us remember that we need to keep our focus.

George - You mentioned Tiger and didn't say anything about Freddie? Are you moving on to bigger and better stars?

Sports stars are role models.  They are disciplined and focused on the "ball".  As Realtors we have to be of the same mindset to stay on top of our game!!

Tracy - I will never forget about Freddie and I will always love him.  My actual focus was more on V.J.  He is amazing.  He can win a golf tournament and then be on the range practicing a bad shot (in his opinion) he hit in the tournament.  Most golfers are celebrating their achievment while V.J. is out practicing till dark.
