Simply putting it it is when you use animals, plants and insects behavior and combine or compare it to human behavior, you get these one-liners or traditional sayings........

I wanted to share some examples used in our everyday expressions. I am not sure how they came about, but these things are here to stay and have made the rounds. I wonder how people who translate this stuff for others make out...? Here goes.....

  • Lord love a duck.....
  • I am a bear for punishment
  • I'll be a monkeys uncle....
  • In a pigs eye...
  • The cats pajama...
  • See you later...alligator
  • After a while...crocodile
  • Its a dog's life..
  • Drunk as a skunk
  • Lead a horse to water, but cant make him drink...
  • Snug as a bug in a rug...
  • Sounds fishy to me..
  • He is like a fish out of water
  • The guy sure likes to pig out...
  • She eats like a bird...

. Some of these sayings are found randomly and commonly in fairy tales and fables. They expand on th usage and concept many times over. They are looked down on by certain religions because it supports something greater than God. Our folklore is rich with this stuff and the Greeks went all out with their tales of the Gods and their names and how they changed into animals etc and interacted with mankind. Romans followed this thinking too and......... China with martial arts training. Today, it is commonly interwoven into cultures all over the world

Beauty and the Beast

Little Red Riding Hood

Seventh Voyage of Sinbad

Lord of the Rings

Well, you........... get the picture

My kids were studying these in school, we had so much fun with them as the kids made up their own in class.  Now, how can we apply to RE?  That could be very fun and perhaps an extension of your post!
