Thought this one was appropriate...since it is now Thanksgiving.
Being in Real Estate gives you opportunities to take advantage of the market...you might see a listing and know it is a deal. My husband and I did that several years ago with a ranch in our neighborhood. It is used sometimes as a house for missionaries to stay while on furlough.
One couple, Joe and Kim, stayed for a year there and returned to Kenya about two years ago. They had their first baby several months ago in Nairobi. The birth was difficult and they worried their baby had lasting effects. Peace of mind is everything to a parent in these situations.
We are friends with them on Facebook as well as on their newsletter distribution so stay up to date with them fairly easily. They longed to come back to the U.S. and to Riley Children's Hospital in Indy specifically....to get a little of that peace of mind.
My husband says to me, "let's help them with their trip back to the States". I say, "Sure...how much?". He says, "All of it." I say, "huh?????" I say, "we can't do that". He says, "why not?". You get the drift of how the conversation went.
In the end...we wrote a check for the flights back to Indy from Kenya for them.
But, that is not the end of the story. The very next day...I get a call from an agent in Plano, TX. I've never met her, never heard of her. She would like me to help her brother find a home in the area (turns out it was 30 miles south of me) because he has been relocated with his company. I call him, he looked at one house (new construction) bought it. I'm not sure I could pick him out of line up; my interaction with him was so brief.
Here's the thing...the commission check after paying the referral was within $50 of the plane tickets to get Joe and Kim and baby Sophia home.
Think it was a coincidence...I don't. Sometimes you have to pay it forward on faith...just ask my husband!
