Austin Volunteer Opportunities: Where to Volunteer in Austin, TX

Do you have extravagant plans this year for Thanksgiving? Maybe you have a festive lunch or dinner that is planned but have some time to yourself around the big meal?

I am always looking for ways to volunteer, and I know it's hard on a lot of people with their hectic schedules to find the time to do so. Especially in this economy, people may be working over time and picking up more shifts; so consequently have less free time. However, we should all remember that there are people out there that need help even more than we do. So, how can you help?

Turkey

Operation Turkey!

Operation Turkey: Help Our Country, Start With Your Community. This organization is a great place to go for all your helping and giving needs! They are actually a locally grown Austin organization.

They offer resources for where to volunteer to serve food, what locations you can drop off food and goods, what shelters are set up for donations, and much more!

Please visit the website and see how you can make a difference this Thanksgiving.

 Austin's 2010 Turkey Trot

This is a 5 mile run and 1 mile walk on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25th. The race starts at the Long Center in Austin located at 701 West Riverside Drive. The 5k run starts at 9:30am but you can get out to the event for your packets starting at 7:30am. There are raffle tickets being sold for only  $10 per ticket (max of 500) and you can have the chance of winning two different $1,500 gift cards to Mellow Johnny's bike shop!

This is not your average way of volunteering, but it is for a good cause! In addition to getting out and getting some much needed excersise on one of the most glutinous days of the year, all proceeds go to charity! Turkey Trot has donated over $1 million in proceeds to Caritas of Austin since this annual fun run began. Visit the website, www.ThunderCloud.com for more info!

Well, I found this a little late, but these needs persist way past the holidays!  We've been talking to the kids lately about where and how we can volunteer our family's time and resources - I think we'll go check out the food bank.
