The Weisser Clan in 2006!The turkey is in the oven, the dressing is made and waiting to be baked. Thanksgiving has arrived, always a little sooner than expected. Today we will enjoy a rather quiet commemoration, as there will just be three of us.

It will be quite different from the days of my youth. There were twelve of us, and both grandmas and grandpap would always join us. Quite often a few aunts and uncles were tossed into the group, along with hordes of cousins.

I don’t know how mother did it all. Preparing Thanksgiving dinner is hard enough. Preparing it for an army must have been overwhelming.

Back then, holidays consisted of food and drink and noise! If you pack enough people into a small enough place, the din was omnipresent.

The only time the roar subsided was when Grace was recited and the food was blessed. My recollection is the pace of the prayer accelerated towards the conclusion as the aroma of the turkey and the fixings was too overpowering to inspire patience.

Those were happy days. And they were very special and dear to me. And although I can’t go back, at least I have my memories.

And they are all full of joy and warmth and the spirit of the season!

Thanks for sharing your memories Richard.

Before the advent of airline travel many families in our generation did visit all under one roof and also lived in close proximity.  I have a big family 53 first cousins.  We alternated one weekend at each set of grandparents.  So I can also relate to the noise level and the moment of silence for prayer and the aroma of turkey cooking.  Grateful for family

May you continue to propser in your profession

Richard ~ Thank you for sharing your memories with all of us.  Now I am remembering back to my own and how much fun it was when I was the kid and all the adults were preparing the feast.

Richard..We have a realatively small group...15 this year.  But if the truth be known...3-4 would not break my heart.

It is 9 above and 10 below windchill.   If I get a chance and a bunch of the company takes a nap..I am going to sneak out into the woods at dusk.  Mr. big is still calling and Archery season is still on.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Richard: Indeed, those days of years ago... We to had some amazingly large get together's. I remember well having to setup three tables. One for the adults, one for the big kids, and one for the small ones. I felt so proud when I made it to the big kids table! Have a great Thanksgiving holiday...

Richard: I don't think I adequately appreciated the Thanksgivings of my youth when all the cousins, aunts and uncles were around.  Even my grandmother would be there.  Now, we have partial family gatherings.  It's not the same.  It's good, but it's not the way they used to be.  Hope you had a good one!

Richard - I found you in the photo ... that was fun. We went to Grandmas house almost every Sunday for dinner. She brought out her fine china and it is something I will never forget. Today we only had 3 of us as well ... more coming on Saturday because of distance and Black Friday. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, albeit a quiet one.
