A short drive from Jacksonville, FL, is Cumberland Island, Georgia. This year, there is another reason to visit: the Plum Orchard Mansion, built in 1898 by the Carnegie family, will be open for tours.
Volunteers in period clothing will be in rooms in the 22,000 square foot Mansion, talking about what is appropriate for the room and the era of the time the home was built.
The tour is the first time the house has been decorated for Christmas since it underwent a $3 million renovation. The renovation included hand restoration to the original griffin-pattern burlap wallpaper that was damaged by water leaks and cracking walls.
The tour will give visitors an accurate depiction of how the holidays were celebrated a century ago - something that benefits from the volunteers being in period dress, and doing the activities people would have done in that era.
You will need reservations, however. The tours run from 2-4pm and cost $6. The only way to get to the island by boat, from the Sea Camp dock. The ferry rid is $17 for adults, $15 for seniors 65 and up, and $12 for children 12 and younger.
