Pay it Forward to those Who Need!

Pay it Forward to those Who Need!

The world is so full of many ways to Pay it Forward in our daily lives.    We pay it forward to our next generation by recycling.......   We pay it forward to those in line behind us at Costco when we let them go ahead with their one or two items......   We pay it forward by letting someone go ahead of us when waiting in line at a stop sign.....    How about the simple opening of a door for someone with a smile?

Most of us try at Holiday time to pay it forward by giving charitably to the Red Cross, Cancer, or other similar organizations.  We also try to bring food and toiletry items to charitable organizations such as Hope - where they can distribute them to those in more need than we.

Just a simple smile and handshake sometimes will turn someone's day around, and make their day more functional for them.  They in turn will help someone else out, (or at least not grump at them!)   I even got a huge smile from my sister when I gave her the shoes that I never could wear (but loved) - brand new!!!!

Pay it Forward

I have always made a point of making sure all of my used clothing, shoes, furniture, etc makes it for another round in someone else's possession.   I assumed that everyone did this same thing, until I was speaking with our garbage man the other day.   What an eye opening conversation!!!    Apparently, the vast majority of we humans just throw our used items straight into the garbage!   A brand new coat might very well be found in the garbage, as well as a brand new toy!   The garbage man said he could start a used items shop if he wanted.....

My sellers are never allowed to just throw away unwanted items.   I have several groups who help the less fortunate - the Battered Women of Bridgeport, the shelters, etc......   These organizations pick up and take things away at your convenience for free!     They are run by volunteers who care.

Don't forget to Pay it Forward this holiday season!

Dagny: I second the motion! There are so many "things" that people have that they don't need--I would suggest that any time you pull something out of your closet or out of your basement, that you don't really use or wear, that you call a local charity instead of throwing it away! There are so many people in need right now that it really WILL change a life forever! Thanks for the post on this subject!

Dagny, Lot's of perfectly good things get thrown away when homes sell, especially estate sales.  We all should follow your lead & make an extra effort to match these items with people who could put them to good use....thanks for the reminder.

Dagny, It has never made any sense to me that anyone would throw a perfectly good item away. It is as though they are clueless about the needs of others less fortunate or they simply do not care. Helping sellers “move” their unwanted items into the hands of those who need it … definitely pays it forward.

Dagny, my wife is a stickler for recycling, taking old clothes to Goodwill and not letting any other member of the family throw out something that might be of valuable to someone less fortunate

Dagny, we are a wasteful nation, and one way "Pay it Forward is to do what you suggested, to not just throw things away but to give them to others less fortunate.

But I don't know about the "letting someone go ahead of us when waiting in line at a stop sign"  I don't know about that :)

Paula - Yes, yes, yes!   Give to the needy!

Dave - Every community has groups that pick up for the needy - find them!  use them!

Kathleen -  You are soo right - we all should keep recycling our used items

Ed- Definitely, your wife if of like mind as I am.....

Ginny - looking forward to yours!

Last but certainly not least - George!    I was wondering who would pick up on that gem I left there......    That's a really tough one, as they are usually not "needy" - RIGHT???

I also try to donate anything that has any life left in it and when sellers want to leave things the buyers don't want I have a couple of local groups that pick up and give to families in need.  I can't imagine throwing something in the trash unless it's completly worn out.

Hi Dagny - Really good post! There are so many places to donate things where people directly benefit, it really is strange to think there are people who don't do this. Thanks for sharing this.

Dagny, I'm always glad to meet someone else who does this!  This is a big campaign of mine with my clients...to educate them on how to recycle and what can be donated (which they are always suprised to learn about) vs. what absolutely must be thrown in the trash.  This "pay it forward" is two-fold:  it helps people and it helps the planet!

Dagny:  Those that are needy definitely see the good and the merit in our taking the time to pass on what we can for re-use.  It could be life-saving or life-altering.  But the givers need it too.  Especially now when there are so many "things" that are happening in our daily lives that can be negative.  Givers need the "high" that comes from doing something for someone else.  It makes you feel better and more capable of facing the daily ups and downs.  You just feel better about yourself and stronger.  It's mental and physical benefits are beyond belief.

You write a strong message Dagny ... one that we should all absorb and then act upon ...

I've been reading lots of blog posts lately about giving and paying it forward surprisingly.  Unsurprisingly, many of the readers (and, sadly, posters) will go no further than reading or writing about giving.   Oh if we all would give just a pittance - how much better would the world be!

Kathy - Giving with no thought of receiving is the best kind!

Emcee - Oh, I think you would be surprised at how many here at Active Rain give so willingly all day every day, so selflessly to others around them in and out of AR!    Just think of how freely everyone shares information!    I know for a fact that many here give a lot all of the time in time to the less fortunate, and money......

I know that you were referring to those who don't, but I always give credit to those who do, and hope it gets contagious!
