Updating Furniture - Painting It Black Brings It Back

By
Home Stager with Sharon Tara Transformations

My favorite way to update a piece of furniture is to paint it black and add new hardware.  This isn't the first post I've written on the subject, and it probably won't be the last.  Every so often I find a new piece to transform.

When my daughter, Ashley, bought her first home, she updated her Nana's bedroom set to make it her own.

When my daughter, Jaime, had her baby she updated the bedroom furniture that I got as a wedding gift to use for the nursery.

I've recently updated a piece with great sentimental value.

My parents bought this cabinet in the 60's when my siblings and I were children.

(The cabinet is behind my brother.)

In the 80's the cabinet was my mother's place to keep toys for her grandchildren.  (my kids)

Today, almost 50 years later, this cabinet is at my house

and it now holds the toys for my grandchildren.

My "transforming furniture" paint of choice is Ben Moore Satin Impervo

The cabinet isn't the only thing in that 1960's picture that has changed it's appearance:

Sharon ~ The black transformation makes these pieces all look like classics!  What a great idea.  Thanks for the inspiration.  P.S.  Your mom looks fantastic -- younger than in the "older" picture!

I agree with Maureen on all counts (your brother's handsome, too!) and have to say I just painted a knotty-pine cabinet bottom of a 92-gallon corner fish tank stand black with B.M. Regal matte black, and a month ago I painted out the smoky blue legs and X bars of a 10-year old Ethan Allen coffee table (with a maple wood top) a dark gray using B.M. Metal and Wood enamel (I got different advice for which products to use, and I did use a white primer for the knotty pine cabinet -- 2 coats).

Both of them look much more up-to-date, but the top and bottom of the glass fish tank have laminate "wood" looking strips which i don't know what to do with. Any ideas?

What you can do with a little black paint. Very impressive way to recycle.

Sharon:  It's a fabulous idea.  I will do this.  Please tell why you chose the BM satin Impervo though.  I need convincing on the cost.

I love black furniture but had never thought about painting it. I have noticed that black furniture is not popular at the furniture and home improvement stores here.

Laura:  Sorry I missed your comment and just caught it.  Thanks for those nice words!  I'm so glad you like the posts and they are useful to you!

Maureen:  Black is my favorite and it is very classic!  Mom will love this comment, thanks on her behalf!!

Amy:  Well my fellow furniture updater...I'm not sure.  I think they may sell strips in other colors and you may be able to replace yours, but I'm not sure.  Maybe some metal trim pieces are available?

Scott:  It's especially nice when the piece has a history in the family.

Patricia:  I like the quality of BM paint and for my first piece, I asked their recommendation and they told me to use it.  Once I used it....I loved it.  Very nice finish.

Jim:  Sorry to hear it's not popular in your area...I thought it was very popular right now.  I love it, and will continue to use it, popular or not.

Debra:  The extra bonus of the old family photos does make it more interesting!

Sharon, thank you for sharing. Fabulous transformations. If you remember I asked about that paint a while ago. I suggested it to my client. She was really pleased with the results. I went and finally bought Ben Moore Satin Impervo for my own project.

I LOVE YOUR NEW PICTURE.

Anna:  I do remember you asking.  I'm so glad the client was happy with it.  It really is an awesome paint.  Thanks on the picture.  I like it, but I hate the position of my hand...wish I hadn't been posed like that, but nothing I could do about it after the fact.

Beautiful transformations and a fun post to read - thanks, Sharon.  White is a great option too, and makes for a totally different look.

Wow..... what synchronicity!  I was just looking at my newly acquired bedroom furniture that once belonged to my Grandmother....... it finally made its way to me!  But it needs refinishing and I was looking at it trying to imagine "BLACK"!!!!  You have given me inspiration to try it.  I hope my Mother won't be shocked..... and I like that you have recommended the Benjamin Moore paint brand and type....thanks Sharon.  This project will be later in the Spring, maybe this Summer, but I've decided to "Paint It Black" (an old Rollingstones song, remember???).

The cabinet is better than new, and I know it was built to last. Great job!

Pat Starnes  And it has such sentimental value. I prefer to make what I have work rather than buy new. As you say the older stuff is built to last, unlike today's stuff.
