What is Senior Move Management?

Very briefly, senior move managers assist older adults with the physical and emotional aspects of relocating their homes. Since this usually occurs at a time when the client has been living in the same place for decades, it includes the sometimes difficult emotional process of sorting through and downsizing considerably before packing up and moving on.

Senior move managers can help with:

  • The decision process surrounding furniture and other belongings
  • Choosing and working with a mover
  • Packing for the move
  • Unpacking and setting up the new home - so it feels like home right away

While doing these very tangible tasks, senior move managers also provide emotional support as they

  • Listen carefully to the client's wants and needs
  • Honor the life and experience of the client when sorting through belongings and memories
  • Help the client's adult children understand that the client has the final say
  • Help the client's adult children with tasks that may be emotionally difficult between the generations

In my next blog posts, I'll go into more detail on how the types of services that senior move managers provide helps both clients and their families.

Hi Charles - Thanks - I have just become aware of that designation and will be looking at it here in CT. It really looks like a good fit with what I do.

Hi Judy, you're filling a huge void, one that will grow larger in the years to come. I learned some years back that I enjoy working with Seniors--I think being able to slow down and be patient are necessary traits--and learned some good information from my SRES classes. Wishing you the best,

Great Job!  Moving is stressful for everyone but especially hard on the elderly.  Some are giving up their lifetime of memories in their homes where they have raised their kids!

Hi Valerie - Thanks for sharing your experience. It's true - there are many situations where seniors and/or their adult children need help with moving, or even with readying a home for aging in place. Patience is a big part, along with a pronounced affinity and liking for seniors.

Hi Lottie - There IS a unique enjoyment that comes from working with seniors, isn't there? Good tip about the SRES classes. I've been doing a little bit of research about that just recently, and will be learning more in the coming weeks. Thanks for your good wishes!

Hi Renee - Oh yeah!  Moving is very stressful for just about everyone, but compound that with a growing frailty or illness, no relatives nearby able (or willing) to help, and it becomes a truly awful ordeal for many seniors. Thanks very much for your comment.

Judy - dealing with seniors is a challenging yet rewarding aspect of our business ..... on occasion you are dealing with family who are more interested in what is best for them rather than what is best for the senior member of their family. ..... but on most occassions the family really appreciates the input we provide from our experiences in dealing with seniors.

Hi Ginny - Yes, it seems as though quite a few elderly people are under-served with regard to these types of services. Thanks - more coming later today!

Hi Judy - great post.  I know Charles in comment #1 mentioned the SRES designation --- maybe those Realtors with the designation in your market area could be a great target for a marketing campaign.  Hope you have a great 2011!
