A question was posed to me recently about the benefits and/or motivation involved for individuals that choose to locate a retirement / second home on the North Fork of Long Island.

For those individuals approaching their fifties, thoughts about where to “be” when the kids are gone is one that niggles- ideas about personal freedom and lower taxes notwithstanding, a very important factor is a “family friendly” location.

Being close, yet…a vacation away.
For those of you that live mid-island, or in close proximity to the city, your transition from family home to ease of 55-plus living has an abundance of offerings. If peace and quiet, along with a very low key and bountiful lifestyle is on your agenda, few areas offer the charm of the North Fork.

Family visitors are often at the heart of the decision to go “a little bit east” on Long Island. While family members may be starting their own lives, offering a respite in your own home is key to some relocating or second home families. Beaches, boating, fishing, corn mazes, fresh produce at farmstands (in some cases, with a tin can and an honor system) are compelling reasons.

The “Mayberry”-esque environment is a welcomed change for most visiting families- and with the enormous offerings for kids from two to ninety two, a “permanent” vacation is often an interesting alternative (and certainly, much closer than Florida).

The train station is close by, and while trips to the city will no longer take a half an hour, the two hour ride, on occasion, is relaxing- and, a small price to pay for the benefits offered in the city, now and then. Only to return home, to your peaceful and pastoral environment.

Living in a place that beckons family members for a vacation full of activity, with a bent toward “peaceful”, is a rarity, indeed- and offered in the North Fork of Long Island. No manic summer, filled with “celebrities” and the accompanying frenzy; no bumper to bumper traffic on any given day; and, with the ocean a short weekday ride away (weekends in the Hamptons are a bit congested), everything is right here.

What often motivates people to plan retirement on the North Fork of Long Island? Based on what has been the deciding factor for many people, it is the simplicity and peace of this lifestyle, full of possibilities for the rest of the family to create their own memories of the North Fork, returning again and again.

Sally Jo, NO ONE can do localism like the "master" ("mistress"?) but I'm plugging away promoting this place- it's beautiful.  Come on out, Sally Jo- we can hit the Hamptons if we want to gawk!

Laurie, You're so right, it is beautiful out there!  And more reasonable then Nassau County.  And all winter you'd have the best wines around!

Oh, and on the clutter?  It goes......

OK, Carole...but just one corner of it, OK?  We'll hide it behind the dusty FAKE tree...you'll have to come out and indulge in the wine this winter- I'd love to "meet" you!

Laurie - what a great insight into your area and did someone say great wines...I'm in!

Great write up Laurie...as I was reading it it was reading like one of those Sunday RE program "tours".

If you are going to feature Long Fork on your website....why not look into a Video Tour with all of the wording you used plus appropriate music! I can almost hear it now!

Then you could feature it...

Cyndee, I'll book your flight: "The North Fork of Long Island Winter Wine Tour, Complete with Complimentary Sleighrides and Peaceful Lights"...or was that "Raucous Nights"...either one works for me!

JOAN.  Joan,Joan,Joan.  Did you happen to notice the bizarre picture size of this post?  I'm not certain that I'm quite up to videos, or music...but- your stuff is AMAZING.  Great graphics, always.  OK- another goal.

laurie,laurie,laurie...there are people who DO that!! And if it was to be a permanent addition to your website it may be worth checking out!(PS check out http://activerain.com/blogs/bruno) I think he's offering free virtual Tours ...you would want video with voice over for North Fork...but for you regular listings it's really easy and he's very helpful...tell him I sent you over. He may be able to recommend a video person!

Joan- you're going to kick me until I get more computer literate, and I completely deserve it- OUCH! :)

Sally Jo- the Hamptons (many parts of it) is the other "fork" on the eastern tip of long island.  If you made a peace sign, the penninsula on the left is the North Fork, and the other, the Hamptons.  The NYC hotshots have summer vacation homes there on a very, very grand scale.  On Labor Day (per the local papers) Jon Bon Jovi had a "bash" that was attended by Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and assorted movie people.  Serious money over there.  The North Fork is farms, vineyards, and down to earth people that are seeking a peaceful place, not a showplace (although we have our share of those).  While just a half hour away, it's completely different (and a bit more ostentatious) than the NF.  Gawk worthy, the Hamptons, and much pricier- we have the bay; they have the ocean.

My wife wouldn't want to make the move away from Lancaster but I'd consider moving home to retire - out between Greenpoint and Orient, though.  Are the prices still better then the south fork?

Hi, Jeff- the Hamptons are still the priciest, and the homes in Greenport, E. Marion and Orient, while not cheap, are within reason (although that's kind of subjective)!

It sounds so beautiful! Coming back to Indianpolis is home and retirement is the reason. This is where we want to be. I'll come for a visit to North Fork, though....we love to travel.

Paula, we'll go sailing!

I was looking at homes in Wading River on Realtor.com - wow, things are indeed higher than I remember.  I used to have a boat at Aquebogue (sp?) marina.  That was a nice area.

Laurie,

Having family that I visit who live in Rocky Point and Jamesport makes me sometimes want to give up all the craziness and stress of living 'mid-island' and move out east where life is so 'low-key'!  Your likening it to living in 'Mayberry' is very accurate....life on the North Fork reminds me of growing up in the 50's when you could go out and leave your house unlocked.  You seem to be virtually 'crime-free' and the people are friendly and 'low-maintenance' (unlike where I live in the township of Huntington!).

The farmstands and vineyards are unparalleled!  The North Fork is definitely a great place to visit AND a great place to live!

VAL!!  I just got your email- my nephew is coming to Mattituck with a friend tonight and tomorrow.  We're taking them out for birthday stuff- the skateboard park in Greenport, pizza, etc.  MOVE OUT HERE!  I'd love to have you closer- and it is...quiet!

Jeff, things have risen a bit!
