Designing a Home Office
Gerry sure did get the right notes in setting up his home office. Personally, I feel that a home office just has to be:
1. Away from distractions
2. Comfortable but not too relaxed
3. Furnished with all the right equipment and furniture (excluding the TV!)
4. With a separate line to avoid incoming personal-social calls
5. With a 'DO NOT DISTURB' sign hanging on the door =D
Designing a Home Office
I have been doing a few posts lately addressing the home office, how to stay focused etc. This time around lets take a look at choosing where that home office space is going to be, and how are you going to utilize it. The space that you designate as your home office doesn't necessarily need to be an elaborate room with dark paneling and gold accents. The only real requirement is that it be a separate space with which to work, uninterrupted.
While living in California I had a wonderful home office that I had built from a large double closet, the space opened up when the closet doors opened. It was well thought out and everything was within a arms length. I got alot of work from that little space. Of course I would have liked something larger, but I made due and it worked beautifully.
One of the biggest things to keep in mind is that you want to be sure you place everything ergonomically, don't put things in awkward places so that when utilizing them you come away with a strain,
If you cannot discipline yourself, NO TV. If you think you might be tempted to catch the game while working, don't even put it into the room.
Make sure you have adequate light. No sense in giving your self an eye strain headache while trying to work.
If you are anything like me, spend a little extra for a good sound system, it is amazing how motivating some good tunes can be.
Last but not least, be sure you have the latest technology, just because it is a home office doesn't mean you have to use a typewriter and ditto machine. Get that bigger monitor, a wireless copier/scanner/fax, a wireless headset. This is an area that will make you money, don't skimp and be cheap. Go for it...
I personally love working from home, it has taken me some time to get used to it, and to discipline myself to stay focused, and productive, but now I really appreciate the home office. GettysburgGerry has a great home office that keeps him connected and serving his clients well.
