(Cindy's Blog about Portland Real Estate & Stuff)

Back when I was a young girl growing up on the east coast, I can remember hopping onto the back of a trailor like we were going on a hayride, but instead the church would drive us to neighborhoods where we would then go door to door Christmas caroling.

Those Long Island winters were nippy, and we had to dress very warm, but when I wasn't with the church group, my friends and I would all get together and go up and down the street doing this.

Those were the days where more often than not we were invited in for some warm cookies and cider...I mean, who today would have these items on hand? Those were the days that you knew your neighbors and they were trusted not to feed you bad poisenous  razor blade filled food, when they trusted the neighborhood kids not to rob them but opened the door freely enjoying our heart felt songs.

Oh the days of walking the streets with the scent of wood burning out of the chimneys, the ease of which we all just sang without though of embarrassment or worrying about carrying a tune. We sung for the fun of it, sung to our hearts content, loud and proud. My friends and I would go to the nursing homes and sing there as well. Just watching the sheer delight on the faces, often soft tears (thinking they were of joy) would push us on more.

I have not heard carolers coming around anymore. Instead, they are at the shopping centers, old town tree lightings, and yes, nursing homes still. Do they go door to door anymore? If you heard a knock on your door today...would you open it freely and listen to carolers..or would you feel like a dork standing there?

I just received an invitation to go caroling..not sure if it's even politically correct to call it Christmas caroling...now just caroling. I have volunteered a couple of times for the Neighbors Helping Neighbors program in West Linn, Oregon which helps those older neighbors with much needed yardwork. The City of West Linn is spearheading a caroling, visiting and dropping of of cookies/fruit and such to these same folks.

Will I be able to get over my older person hangups of embarrassment, and not being able to carry a tune? Why is it that many of us lose that free spirit as we get older?  Maybe this is my year to sing with abandon again! (Outside of the shower that is).

Cindy - a good question, I have not been caroling in decades. And, the last time I can remember carolers going around was when I lived in Beaverton, in the mid 90's. Good for you to be going out and joining in. Blessings and prosperity to you this Christmas season.

Here in Newport and Toledo on the central Oregon coast, I have heard carolers in the streets. They have not yet ventured to come up my long driveway, so I will walk down to watch them if I hear them. We are a small town of less than 4000 people with an old fashioned Main Street and a train and marina within walking distance. (I just posted a couple of photo tours of my area if you are at all curious!) At Hallowe'en we always have a good number of tirck or treaters, so traditions are alive and well here. By the way, I agree with Santa above, it is Christmas caroling!

Hi Charles, It is Christmas Caroling for sure! None of this "PC" stuff!

Mike, The last time I caroled was in the (cough) 60's and early 70's. Surprised they were even doing it in the 90's! A Beaverton man huh? Cool. Blessings and Prosperity to you as well!

Hi Barbara, Sounds like your town is a step back in time, which is very fun! I live in West Linn very close to the old town Willamette area, which they redid and now has lots of fun shops and restaurants. They will be having carolers and fun this year as well. I have been to the Aquarium in Newport, but didn't really check out the town. Now I'll have to do so!

We still carol. I love it. It is undoubtedly the best way to get family and friends into the Christmas spirit. Once you join along it will lift your spirits. It does that to mine. Have a great Dec.

Cindy- I haven't seen Christmas Caroling since the 80s. We use to have church members that went around and carolled in different neighborhoods, but that stopped as it seemed people were just getting too busy with their own life. Nice to remember though. A simpler time.

Hello Cindy and there is not very much caroling anymore, I would think it's still does on the east coast and may come back in the future ...

Hi Jessica, That is so cool that you still carol. We have friends that always like to sing around the piano if they have a christmas party and you can see that everyone feels quite awkward at first, but then once you let go, it's fun. Have a great December as well

Bill, It was a simpler time. Everyone gets so busy with life stuff as you said, I think we lost a bit of good life stuff along the way.

Hi VB, I was thinking maybe in the smaller towns across the country they probably still do. I bet Vegas has lots of Elvis carolers :)

Cindy, I liked your "none of this 'PC' stuff" comment.  I feel the same way. Let's call a spade a spade.

It does seem to be a thing of the past, and yet I remember doing it too, both with the church and in the neighborhood! I hope you all "sing your hearts out" ! May the weather be just right with great big gentle snow flakes falling from the sky. Enjoy!
