Speechless Squirrel on a Not So Speechless Sunday...

We noticed a few weeks ago that something was tearing apart our Outdoor furniture.  We found rips & holes in the cushions, but weren't sure if it was wear & tear from the weather or maybe a bird, or maybe something else.  A few minutes ago, as I was unlocking the back door to let the dog out, I finally busted the guilty party as he ripped the stuffing out of the cushions at warp speed.

Darn Squirrel!

(My apologies for the quality of the photo...it was taken through a window & a screen)

Any tips on how to get rid of squirrels without harming them?

HA!  Talk about red handed!  We had a woodchuck tearing up ours.  So,... what do you do to stop that?

Amy-

Probably using it for nesting material. Unfortunately, I have no solution for you other than to put the furniture away.

Those little guys can certainly wreak some havoc can't they.  Cute but annoying.

And why would you not want to harm the criminal?  Just kidding.

Well they may be cute but can be destructive. Feeding them only allows them to multiply more successfully. Best to put the other cushions away before they ruin them all.

Amy, I was going to jump right in here and give you the answer to your problem but then you went and put in the words "without harming."  Now you have gone and made it difficult----because a barbeque might have been in order otherwise :)

that stuff is not edible to a squirrel... but it makes great nesting material.

I have all sort of suggestions as to how to "take care" of your squirrel problem.  But all of them involve harming them...

Lenn - I fear that putting a feeder out will just attract more of the little rascals...Not sure because, I have never had a problem before.

Laura - Cute new photo!  If I come up with the perfect solution, I'll let you know!

Bill - As a last resort, we will put the furniture away...But then, where we will sit?

Paula - They are cute, but I am not happy about my furniture!  Oh, what to do?

Marian - You're lucky, I haven't invited the little guy in to live with us...What's one more, Right? HA!

Glenn - I have a feeling, we will end up with the cushions in the garage.  Maybe replace them in the spring and hope for the best.  If not, Furniture without cushions may be in our future.

Charlie - A barbecue?  You're killing me!

Alan - I too think they are creating a nest close by...My husband's first thought was a BB Gun, but he knows that wouldn't fly with me.  So far, I am thinking about removing the cushions.  Maybe I could have them covered or replaced with something a little tougher for a squirrel to get at?  Hmmmmm?

I can't believe your husband suggested a BB Gun.  You're right... that just won't fly.  That would only piss them off.  If you're going to do any serious damage, it needs to be a Pellet Gun!  ;-)

They are almost impossible to get rid of and the spray repellent doesn't work. Why not find a couple of old cushions, rip them open, and give them what they want. Maybe if they have enough nesting material that is easy to get, they'll leave yours alone. Just a thought.

This past summer, the squirrels and chipmunks came up on my porch and dug out my potted plants looking for food - very annoying! Then I dug out my UGGs from the attic and found acorns. What's next?!

Amy Last summer, we were in Italy and came home to find our pillows that were stored under the barbecue and outdoor kitchen area, all shredded. It was bees!!!! Not fun getting rid of them!

I gave my squirrel nice soft balls of dog fur!   When I brush my dogs I get their soft undercoat in the brush.  I place it in one spot under the tree and both the squirrel and the birds take it away to nest and leave our cushions alone.   One silly bird took Christmas tinsel and made a nest with it.  Looked like aluminum siding!

Alan - I am going to pretend that you didn't say that...Just like I am going to pretend that my husband didn't think of a bb gun!  "You'll shoot your eye out"...

Helen - You know...I thought of that ;0)  If they would just ask me, I'd give them a pillow and a blanket!

Kristine - Not a fan of UGGS, but acorns....

Ellen - I'll take the squirrels over Bees anyday...Not fun at all!

Susan - A bird's nest with Christmas tinsel...Probably brought up the resale value :-)  I had read somewhere to place animals fur outside for the birds to use.  With five cats & a really furry dog, That's a great idea...Will put that idea into action, Thanks.

Good morning Amy. Hav-a-heart traps (small) work quite well. I trapped 7 squirrels and 40 chipmunks this year and took them to their new home far, far away from here. They cost about $25 online. Bait them with peanuts or corn. The only downside is that you will catch birds too...

Michael - Do the birds escape unharmed?  If so, this sounds like a good option, I may even have a trap in the garage somewhere (from my days of Stray cat rescue).

Oh, that's right I heard that people hair clippings in the garden would keep bunnies away.  Do you think that would keep squirles away?  Cheyenne pepper spray works too, just don't get it on the arms of the chair so people end up with it on their hands.  That could bring tears to there eyes!  Glad you like the updated photo!  You know us stagers, just can't help but to update.  LOL!

Yes! You may need to get a larger cage for cats, as the small cage is about 8x8x16...

Hi Amy,

I would guess the squirrel is looking for nesting material.  Put the cushions away and the dog outside for a few weeks until the nests are complete.  Maybe too, offer an alternative nesting material (but I wouldn't want to do anything that would encourage the squirrels to hang around).
