Fund Raising Events Begin for a Local High School Band Participating in the 70th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor Attack
The Greenbrier East High School (GEHS) Spartan Marching Band is proud to have been invited once again to participate in the Waikiki Holiday Parade in November 2011, in Hawaii.
This parade commemorates the 70th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. GEHS is the only high school band from WV invited to participate in this prestigious event. GEHS Band, under the direction of Jim Allder, participated in the 60th anniversary parade in 2001.
GEHS will be performing honorary concerts at the Pearl Harbor Memorial and on the deck of the USS Missouri, and will be the only band representing West Virginia in the parade. A surviving veteran from West Virginia will be invited as a guest to travel with the band to Hawaii.
In an effort to raise funds to cover the cost of the trip, numerous fund
raising events will take place over the course of the next year.
The band will stage its first major fundraiser for the Hawaii trip, on December 7, Pearl Harbor Day. A luau will be held at the Roland Sharp Alumni Center at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The event will include a Hawaiian-style dinner and entertainment provided by the GEHS Spartan band and steel drum band. Hawaiian attire is encouraged.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children age 12 and under and may be purchased at Lowell’s Bakery in Frankford, Evri Chart in White Sulphur Springs, Wolf Creek Gallery in Alderson and The Wild Bean in Lewisburg.
On Thursday, December 16th a fund raiser will be held at the Bob Evans Restaurant in Lewisburg, from 4:00-9:00 pm. When you pay your bill, the GEHS Band will automatically receive 15% of your total check. This applies to dine in or carry out orders. Parents and students of the band will be on hand to bus tables, refill coffee and generally take good care of you. They willl also be happy to answer any questions about the trip or the parade you may have. The more you order and the bigger your party, the more you help the band. So, have dessert and coffee while enjoying the sounds of the GEHS Bluegrass Band who will be on hand to entertain you.
