Oh, please admit it --- you hate to admit but PLEASE admit it . . . Yes, I have messed up(substitute the screw-up word of choice)..... As much as it may pain you to say it ... it happens .... yes, to all of us. So as Realtor Judi Barrett from Oklahoma writes . . . fess up, face the consequences and move on. Read on for more great insights...
You messed up... What are you going to do about it? ... The Defining line between whether you're a professional or not!
I have yet to meet the perfect person. I have yet to meet the person that does NOT make an occasional mistake. I've made my share and probably will continue to do so as long as I live on THIS earth. So what do you do after making a mistake? What's the next move? How do you handle it? Miracle Mike's motto is one that stayed with me when I read it right after joining Active Rain. Hopefully he won't mind if I repeat here:
I show up ON TIME.
I do WHAT I SAY I'm going to do.
I FINISH What I start.
If I mess, I 'FESS UP & fix it
.
To me he drew the line defining professional attitude and actions.
So what do you do if you mess up?
I try to follow Mike's example and 'FESS UP & fix it.
Some things can't be fixed but if it's my fault that it's messed up, I'm going to do my darnest to get it fixed...
My promise to you..
and Mike, thanks for putting it out there where the world can call you to account for it.
If I ever have clients moving to Arizona that are going to need a mortgage, you're going to the first person that knows about it.
When I mess up it usually means dollars out of my pocket. I feel obligated. If the 2nd lender wants a bigger settlement and nobody can come up with it, where does the money come from? Our commission. That is really not a mistake but the point is we need to do right by the client always.
Jessica - in the scenario you describe you are correct you are not to blame. If you choose to participate monetarily, it's a business decision on your part and has nothing with admitting a mistake or doing something wrong.
Personal responsibility is an integral part of integrity. Fixing the problem right can make you 10 times more than the fix cost... in referrals and repeat business.
When we mistakes, its very important that we are accountable for them. We correct them and we do not repeat them. Mistakes makes us better with what we do.

I love to make mistakes. No, not really. But you will make some boo boo's if you are actually working at anything.

When I am wrong, I am the first to say, "hey, I am wrong" and same goes for an apology ;)
I agree Jon - without mistakes we are not moving forward. Thanks for your comment.
I do so agree with that. It is so simple and yet very effective.
Real estate is loaded with problems, even on a good day. Someone has to take ownership of providing solutions, especially if they caused the problem!!
Mess up? Fess up and Fix it!!
That is memorable!
Easy to say. Harder to do...

Lauren - good for you.
Tim - thanks for your comment - simple is good.
"Mess up? Fess up and Fix it!!"
Wish more people would observe this adage.
Good reminder!
Dawn - you are absolutely correct - there is a new challenge everyday
Phil - nothing worthwhile is ever easy - thanks for your comment
Eric - YEP!

Can you remove the Ugg Boot spam post above?
I was thinking "we call it being accountable" or responsible as Cameron states above!
Cameron and Marilyn - you are correct - personal responsibility and accountability is key. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Will - could not have said it better. Thanks.
