VDOT, Virginia Department of Transportation Comes Through Again.  Potholes Gone.

When you live on an unpaved rural road, road maintenance is important.

I love living in the country and I am fine with the gravel road ways.  However, from time to time, the potholes are a challenge at best.  I drive a 4Runner and can navigate these barriers fine, but many in my area drive more sporty vehicles and really must crawl these potholes, or take the long way out where the road is usually not any better.

THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION does a good job of maintaining the road in front of my home.   How do they know when a road is in need of maintenance??

WE HAVE A SPECIAL TELEPHONE NUMBER to call to request road maintenance, 800-FOR-ROAD.  How easy can it get and the call is handled by A VERY FRIENDLY LIVE PERSON!  Now that surprised me.  In an era where you can't even get a live person on the phone at the telephone company, Virginia does it better.  I heard of this service on the radio and it works.

VDOT

WATER IS ALWAYS THE CULPRIT.  There is a little creek that runs beside the gravel road in front of my home and has a tendency to run across the road way, creating a swale and "washing the road out" in the same spot, regularly.

AND ANOTHER THING.  The person who took my call said it may take 2-3 weeks for the repairs to be made.  However, they appeared and did the job in less than a week.

SO, THANK YOU VDOT.  Good job!

For real estate agents and home buyers??  When listing, selling or buying real estate in Virginia, find out who is responsible for road maintenance for homes of interest.

Lenn, This is so inspiring to know that Virginia takes care of the roadways. This just gets back to a strong and well managed budget which California certainly does not have.

And VA did it with a throw-back budget from many years ago.  REAL cutbacks!

Kathleen.  HA!  I don't even want to comment on CA's budget.  I expect we'll all be sending some money California's way shortly, tax money that is.

Jay.  You bet.  Gov. MacDonald took them all on and produced a surplus and we still get our roads maintained.

Lenn - Why wouldn't you want to subsidize California .... we use the same principle as the federal government ... spend money you don't have, mandate legislation you don't fund, ignore the electorate, and allow unconsitutional propositions on the ballot - so you can legally ignore the electorate!  AND we have Disneyland ... no intentional comparison to be made to Washington DC ...

Jack.  I'm not Washington, DC.  I'm Northern Virginia.  We don't have any of the lovely things you mention and we're suffering with a balanced budget.  Eeeekkkkk.

Lenn, getting any public department to answer the phone is a miracle, and to actually get a request for repair acknowledged and completed falls under acts from the Almighty.

Lou.  Yes, they do.

Damon.  HA!  I recall a time when I commuted from MD to DC to work.  The road conditions changed dramatically when I crossed the boundary from DC to MD from driving an obstacle course to a smooth road.

Krista.  Indeed.  It was the live voice that stunned me.

Sheila.  They do indeed.

Ed.  I was surprised to see them on the road so quickly since they said it would take 2-3 weeks and they appeared in less than a week.

Wish Pa was like that, all we get from Penndot is long delays and 30 guys standing around supervising two guys doing all the work, we have the worst roads in the country

Gerry.  I have watched VDOT maintain this road for almost 5 years now.  One guy in one large piece of equipment is all that comes.  One very conciencious operator.
