I f you aren’t already aware, when a property requests a zoning designation change, the city puts a big, red zoning “Z” out front. This sign is there to let the fine folks of Harrisburg know that change is afoot. It is, then, the citizen’s responsibility to find out what they feel they need to know.
Well, there are plenty of “Z”s out there right now so i thought I would share with you some of the current proposals.
The most important of these is the “Z” on Morehead Road. It is directly across from the entrance to Rocky River Crossing. This property is a little over 2 acres and is flanked on each side by other homes in the neighborhood. The proposed change is a daycare.
The person/people looking to buy the property have approached the city to obtain a conditional use permit (They want special permission to put in a daycare). This is completely allowable with the city through this permit. Here is the catch. The daycare is going to be a whopping 17,000 square feet. Just as a reference, the Ruckus House Daycare is 15,000 square feet.
There will be a hearing on this permit on September 18th, Tuesday, at 7:00pm. You should be aware of it and if you feel strongly one way or the other, you should be present at this hearing. The plans for the daycare are on file in the Harrisburg Town Hall. Just ask for zoning. Wayne Crimmenger is more than happy to share these plans with you if you would like to come take a look.
The next big, red “Z” to discuss is on Hwy 49 on the Charlotte side of Harrisburg, just before you get to Harrisburg Family Physicians. There is a car wash proposed for that land. I asked what kind but the city is not allowed to give out too many details. I do know it is a chain that we have all heard of and you do not wash the car yourself. My best guess is that the name has a familiar “ring” to it!
There is a red “Z” at the property on Robinson Church Rd where the Old Post Office is. The city is wanting to expand the concept of that land, adding another outbuilding and maybe a couple of miniature trains for the kiddies. This, by far, is my favorite idea!!!!
And, finally, on Hwy 49 toward Concord, there is a “Z.” The owner wants to put in a mini-storage facility. There are some folks who are concerned about this one. I know this issue is also on the books for the meeting on the 18th.
I encourage everyone to attend the zoning meeting on Tuesday, Sept 18th at 7pm. Whether you are for a project or against it, we all need to be aware of the issues our city faces. If you have children, this is a wonderful opportunity for them to see the political process in action! We are all responsible for the growth of our fair town. I hope to see you all there!
