And Just Like That, Alexandria Louisiana Lost 330 Jobs

Monday was a tough day for my fair city. Startek, a local customer service call center, sent a mass email to its employees and the media letting them know that they were being laid off. Fear not for the company though as they are putting finishing touches on a new call center in Costa Rica!

Apparently Costa Rica has become the new India for customer service centers. Once complete the center will employ over 500 workers at a fraction of the cost of the Alexandria center. And let's just say the benefits package for workers in Central America is far cheaper than one in the states!

Oddly enough I am not sure who/ if anyone to blame for this. In a cut throat business environment Startek is doing what it can to stay afloat. Blame the workers you say? As in all Americans are lazy and overpaid? Startek paid workers between 20,000-30,000 a year. Hardly enough to live the Miller life!

Perhaps blame could be placed on our politicians. In an attempt to lure the business, Startek was given all sorts of tax breaks. With their early departure let's just say the city coffers aren't exactly at flood stage...

But such blame would be shortsighted. Had the city not offered such breaks, the business would have located elsewhere from the begining. On some levels isn't it better to love and lose than never to have loved at all?

In the end perhaps sadness is a better emotion. Our economy is changing and these workers (along with our city on some level) were simply left behind. It would be cliche to mention the plight of being let go at Christmas. Frankly losing a job in March would be just as bad.

These workers are in for a tough recovery. There simply are not 330 extra jobs floating around my market. Many will need some form of government assistance. Some will need our help as Realtors. All need our prayers.

Doug, Another sad commentary of life in these United States. God Bless them all. The workers losing their jobs at such a bad time and Startek in their folly.

Doug,  Pretty sad news...losing your job via email would be similar to losing your spouse via a text!  Not just a little tasteless!  Tough time for those who lost their jobs...most call center employees are not highly educated and/or have tons of experience so the job search is even more challenging.  I agree that losing a job any time of year is bad, but honestly the psychological impact of losing a job in the holiday season is very detrimental.  Sorry to hear this news.

Charles--I've had friends who have been downsized. For some the impact on employer trust last a lifetime.

Deborah--I agree the email may seem tasteless. But in this age of instant communication I guess it beats reading about the layoffs online.

David-- On some level we are all to blame. But buying American can be tough. My friend's American truck was built in Mexico, while my Japanese van was built in Alabama. We do live in interesting times.

The sad thing is they are still running TV spots recruiting workers. That has to be hard to watch!

Costa Rica is the new “in” location for “near-shoring.” With a population of about 4 million people, Costa Rica boasts the region’s oldest democracy, political stability, infrastructure and an impressive 95% literacy rate. A Free Trade Agreement with the United States has companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Hewlett Packard , and Intel making substantial investments in Costa Rican outsourcing call centers. It ranks behind powerhouses India and China as one of the most competitive offshore outsourcing destinations offering high-paying, highly sought-after jobs. Global competitive pressures are forcing United States corporations to lower their costs. Today, it is necessary to do offshore outsourcing just to remain competitive. After careful analysis, many companies have now expanded their operations in Costa Rica . It is attractive in terms of cost and breadth of capabilities. Business conditions are stable and secure, not like other countries with lower levels of working conditions and unstable governments. Our Costa Rican Call Center offers the highest quality bilingual call center support for wages that are 40%-80% lower than the United States. There are plenty of English speakers attuned to the needs of the North American market. We encourage you to visit one of our call centers on your next personal vacation or business trip to Central America’s paradise, Costa Rica. While you are here, we would recommend taking an extra day of your trip to visit breathtaking virgin beaches, play golf next to the ocean, try your luck at deep sea fishing, explore tropical jungles, climb volcanos or just relax in natural hot springs. Come and see for yourself why call center outsourcing in Costa Rica is a perfect solution for your growing company and a powerhouse in the BPO industry. http://www.costaricascallcenter.com
