Social Media-It's Not About One Hand Waving Cyberspace
How many times have you added a “friend” in Facebook or decided to “follow” someone on Twitter only to discover his or her participation in social media is limited to a link to a blog post or canned article and nothing else.   You realize after a few weeks they don’t join the conversation by interacting with you or anyone else.

At some point the one hand waving approach to social media leads friends and followers to click the UN button.  What UN button?  The un-follow and un-friend one.  And that is only for the folks you know are following you.  There are those pesky lurkers.  The ones who never say anything to you directly but after watching your lack of interaction decide your one-dimensional approach to social media isn’t worth following anymore.

Have you ever stopped to think about the number of connections you may have lost when this happens?   A potential referral from another agent.
A prospective client or two.  Each one adds up to opportunity lost. If generating business is your number one reason for signing up for social media accounts then you need to make sure you are making them work for you not against you.

Social Media It's All About the Interaction
Not everyone is going to be a social media superstar.   You have to decide what makes the most sense for you.  But if you have a link to your Facebook and Twitter accounts on your business cards and Active Rain profile then make them work for you.  Your social media plan has to be more than one hand in the air.  Participate and see what happens when two hands and more connect.  It will be a sound that will make you realize the time you spend is well worth it.

Tom-I'm not sure what you mean by "the biggest one you've seen"?  Please explain I'd love to know.

Lisa-I certainly wouldn't call myself an expert at Twitter but I am starting to see some interesting connections.  Time will tell.

Congrats on the feature, Cindy, and on the great thoughts here. It's about interaction, not just being there.

It's hard to be joining in every day, but if you spend a little time each week on different platforms, then I think you can create relationships that last...

Yes, I guilty.  I've not taken time to work Facebook or other social media after I've joined.  Trying to change that in 2011.

I've got some work to do, but am pretty good at participating in several networks.

Note to self - find one more hour for my day. Is that asking much? 25 hours a day would work just fine. Maybe Santa could help me find one. I have to consistenly check Facebook...and become interactive. Great blog and I'm sure it will help all those who read it.

DeeDee-the nice thing about Twitter is it's quick communication so it is easy to be invovled in a conversation or two.

Erica-it was great to be able to sit with you at RainCamp and chat face to face.  That is the ultimate outcome of social media.

Lynn-sleep is highly overrated...LOL.  Finding a couple of extra minutes in a day is usually all it takes.

You mean more than a blog a year? Such work! Some people just don't get it & I've come to the notion that you just can't talk to someone that's a dumb as a rock.
