6 Comments on FTC talking about internet surfers having a right to opt IN to tracking
Mike - to me, having a history in advertising, and knowing what advertisers are accustomed to being able to track, down to the UPC codes on the items we purchase, I would not be opting in to have anyone track my online activities, however, the cookies most sites require mean some of my activity is already registered...Big Brother, anyone?
Hi Mike, I am with you...I want government to back off...and I really don't like people following my clicks, my spending, my hairdo or my dog..oh now I feel better, thanks for letting me release some steam!
Carol and Rene,
We are in the minority. People have rushed to embrace tracking as long as they get a bauble or trinket in return.
We have made a few companies very rich and very powerful in the pursuit of "free."
Mike, Good point on how people will readily give up some of their personal privacy or freedoms if they feel there is a return. That is how the masses are manipulated into believing things will be better for them if Big Brother has more access into their lives. The internet has been anything, but private. It's about time that changed.
James,
My favorite line on the topic was from a FB user, "Everybody knows. Nobody cares."
Everybody knows . . . nobody cares. Funny. But, the advertisers like to collect data and churn out reports, and get a feel for things. Brave new world. Like I've said before -- just chip me, and get it over with already. I'm just a cog . . . the older I get the more I realize this.
I'm confused! Just read this article on CNN Money: FTC "do not track"
