Remember the Foot Long Hot Dog at Judsonia AR? No wonder it closed....

Going to Judsonia or Bald Knob from Searcy on the old road (scenic route Hwy 367) takes you by this scene.

Footlong hot dog Judsonia

This is the way the Judsonia Dairy Freeze looks today.....vacant, empty.  And I suspect it had something to do with adding that drive-through which covered the front part of the dog.

My children and I always loved to stop at the Footlong Dog.  Even now my directions to people would be, "Turn left at the Foot long hot dog stand."  Alas.  Half the dog disappeared.  Why couldn't they have painted the front of the dog right through that drive-through.  They just didn't know how much the art work was appreciated!!

Here's the real name but the Footlong Dog was the best known name.

Charles, it was so simple that even a kid could understand.  Not great art but fun art!  We called them drive-ins too.

Richard, as Charles said, the old non-franchise places have nearly all disappeared.  I miss them too.

Don, I am so glad you did that!!  That is exactly what they should have done way back......Or they could have had him wrap all the way over the drive-through and finish up on the front glass.   LOL

Barbara, I'm glad you posted this - Jenna and I have driven past that stand hundreds of times and always wondered about it. I'm glad that it was once a fixture along that way, even if it's just a sad ruin now.

Speaking of Highway 367, one place I'd like to hear more about is the "Texas-Illinois Motel," an abandoned and ruined building between Judsonia and Bald Knob. The big and probably once elaborate sign is still by the road and advertises a lot of bygone features. This one is, I'm sure, just one of the many roadside motels that used to line that highway, but its big sign is one of the most visible.

Oh Godmother,

I so wish that I could've been around in those days, it would've provided me with an extra source of income. I would sooooooo love to be the mascot for that firm.

Luke, I agree with you that we need to possibly do an article about those motels.  There are two that I notice each trip I make.  I even stopped to make a picture one day but didn't succeed.  The road truly was filled with motels, stores, and all kinds of interesting places before the freeway opened up.  I remember my son loved to have me drive him along it and stop at places to look for what he considered treasures.  Thanks for comments.  I liked your article in the paper today.

Nutsy, this is one of your annoying days....you know I hate that outfit.  You DO NOT look like a "hot dog squirrel" but like a yellow worm.

Tinker, those old drive-ins were so much fun for young people.  The dog made it more fun!

Godmother,

I found this blog post again and I am still interested in being the official hotdog.

Nutsy, in that outfit you'd just attract dogs who'd eat anything.  Go change.

Barbara,

If I didn't live in AR (which I never did), and if I was a little kid (I was one, once upon a time), and if my parents took me there to eat a Footlong, I would have thought I was eating a real dog and I wouldn't eat it. Or if I couldn't speak English, and all I could see was the picture of the headless dog, I would have been deathly afraid to eat it! I'm sure I would have thought to myself, "What happened to the dogs head?"

No, I definitely would not eat a Footlong.

Hmmmm....Maybe that's why it closed up.

Patricia, I can see you put a lot of thought into this comment and they are great thoughts!  You came to the same conclusion that I did.  Take away half a dog and you no longer have a dog!  Too bad the art work was so unappreciated.

I was told a LONG time ago that my uncle is the one that actually painted the dog.

I remember this store when I was little.. that was THE BEST place to get footlongs and chocolate malts! Yummy!

Capturedmoments, I wonder if your uncle ever realized how many kids he pleased and how many people used that "weenie dog" for directions.  I really was sad to see them take away half the dog.  Half the success of the business must have fled along with the dog.  LOL

I can not eat a hot dog with out chili and cole slaw on it. That is comfort food but I limit it to a few times a year.
