Each year fires occurring during the holiday season injure over 1,600 Americans, according to firesafety.gov. By following precautionary tips, you can ensure a safe holiday season for you and your family.
- When selecting a Christmas tree, needles on a fresh tree should be green and hard to pull back from the branches.
- Do not place your tree near a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent.
- When the tree becomes dry, dispose of it promptly.
- Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, bare spots, broken or gapped sockets and excessive wear.
- Do not link more than three light strands, unless directions state that it is safe.
- Connect strings of light to an extension cord before plugging the cord into an outlet.
- All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents.
- Avoid using lit candles unless they are in stable holders and never left unattended.
