The Big Sectional

By
Home Stager with AccentPositives Home Staging 658279

Those big sectionals are really great, especially if you have a big family.  The problem is many times they are so big they can overtake the whole room.  The most common mistake made with this type of furniture is to mash it up against a wall, the largest wall in the room.

What happens then is you have the big hole in the room and nothing to look at but a big fat couch!

This room redesign also included removing clutter from a very interesting and unusually shaped fireplace so that it could be the star of the room.

Repositioning the sectional and adding splashes of color make the couch less the clumsy main attraction and more the warm place to hang out.

It doesn't take much to change the entire look of a space.  A little courage when it comes to color and pattern can spice things up and create a whole new room.  Don't be afraid to mix and match styles and colors.

I love angling those big things.  Everyone is always so surprised at how much better it can fit!  I often separate them into individual pieces and the use faux plants, small table and/or throws to hide the connector pieces.

Hi Ana, oh the pain of owing a big comfy sectional! I shudder every time I find one in a home. The difference is like night and day in your shots. Great post!

What a great solution, Ana. Too often, furniture pieces are held hostage against walls. Your post proves that there are other GREAT solutions.

I believe that sectionals should be outlawed.  I've worked with two many first time home buyers who've tried to buy a home to fit their big sectional from their apartment living.  Humongous master bedroom suites are another pet peeve of mine.

Hi Karen, as they say, there is always more than one way to skin a cat!  I think separating pieces is a great solution especially when rooms are really long and narrow.

Hi Michelle, thanks and yes, my heart sinks when I walk in and see the monster couch LOL!

Hi Lyn, thank you very much:)

Hi Cathy, the middle piece kept throwing everything off because it never looked centered in front of that big pretty window.  The client would hear nothing of splitting it up:)

Hi Kathie, if does feel less empty, thanks for commenting:)

Hi Kelly, that rug was a real find color wise.  It had color bands from everything in the room, fireplace included.  It was a special order from Home Depot.  I found the square for the colors and luckily they make a round one and were able to ship on request!  It's unusual to find the perfect rug so quickly for me anyway. love Home Depot!

Hi Margaret, a great realtor and good stager always make a great team! Thanks for commenting.

Hi Kathy, you are right...I call it the gymnasium effect....it is funny sometimes seeing everything, and I mean everything in a huge square pushed up against the walls.

Ana,

Wow your transformation changed the whole look of the room.  As you drew the furniture into the room it brought it from a museum feel to the look and feel of a vey cozy family room.  Great job!

It's amazing what effect just changing the position of furniture can make. This sectional does not feel as big any more because we look now at the flank side rather than the full sofa. It emphasizes the fireplace and adding the area rug made the space feel so much warmer as well. Great job!!!!

hi, Ana:
Those big sectional are one of my pet peeves!  Comfortable to live - but always a thorn in the foot when it comes to Staging.
I love what you did in the above room! [No offense intended] A few simplistic changes that made a great transformation!  Nicely done!

Thanks Birgit, It's always a shame when you see a nice fireplace hidden and it is so common.  Funny because most every buyer wants one, but they cover them up when they move in!

Hi Michael, thanks and no offense taken:)  I have always been in the less is more camp and KISS when it comes to staging and redesign.  I think if you don't it's kinda like the BSr who just keeps talking and talking until they bury themself LOL  Sometimes the perception of staging is that it is all about oolala and expensive when it really is not that at all... ok, maybe a little oolala:)

Ana, great subject! I see that type of bulky reclining sofas all the time. You were lucky that you had one that had the right side angle, because you see it sometimes blocking the flow with the long side and if you turn it to open up the space the short end will block the fire place. Anyway, great transformation. Now the living room looks much more invited. Excellent job.

Hi Anna, great name by the way:)

Thanks for commenting, This sofa had an extra middle piece, so there was no short end really.  That middle piece really made it off center looking when you stood in front of it.  It is really a BIG BIG piece.

Carol, too funny, and yes those huge master suites are nice but after all it's a sleeping and relaxation place how much room do you need for that, some of them look like bowling alleys!

Me neither Sandi but they do have their good points if you have a big family.  Like not having to hang on the edgeof the arms to watch TV to see around your teenager's big feet LOL!
