Each winter my wife and I drive south to spend a full month in a very lovely two bedroom condo right on the sandy beach in California. This has been a Tyrrell tradition for many decades.
My grandparents used to spend four months every winter in Laguna Beach, California. They would drive down in their 1939 Chevrolet each November and return at the end of February. They stayed in the same apartment every year just across the street from the Victor Hugo Inn and the Laguna Beach Art Gallery on the Pacific Coast Highway. One of my uncles and his wife carried on the tradition and continued for many years until health issues forbid it. As a child, my family used to find our way down there almost every year for a visit.
The smell of the ocean, the palm trees, the abalone shells, the soft sand underfoot and the wonder of it all had such an impact on me as a child that I decided many years ago to follow suit. So, this will be our fourth winter in southern California. We arrive at our seaside condo exactly one month today.
We shall entertain our own visitors who come to spend a week with us. It is a great change of pace and we look forward to going.
