T.O.S. is not a P.O.S.

Private Property SignEvery website you sign up for or program you download has a Terms of Service (T.O.S.) and a Privacy Policy. We’re all guilty of just blindly clicking “I Accept” and moving on but have you ever taken the time to read what you’re agreeing to?

I read here on ActiveRain about a cool service that lets you handle all of your social media from one site. As I started signing up, I read the Privacy Policy and learned that if I use their service, I am giving them the right to sell my information. Since I was about to give them access to my Facebook, Twitter and Linked In accounts, that’s a whole heck of a lot of information that they have access to and can sell. Then I read the T.O.S. and saw that while I retain ownership of my content, they have a “worldwide, royalty-free, sub-licensable, transferable, irrevocable, perpetual license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform” my content. What!!! Since I’m not about to give a company those rights, I’ll continue to log in separately for my social media.

The next time you sign up for a new service, take the time to read what they will do with your information and don’t blindly click “I Accept”.

Have you checked the terms of service for all the individual sites? I bet there are plenty of site favorable loopholes as well.

Between all of those social networking sites you listed...that IS a lot of information about you. I agree. The service isn't worth it, and I wouldn't do it. I guess we all should take the time to read the TOS agreements, and make sure we know what we are getting ourselves into.

You're right Gary, but I want to limit as much as I can who can use my content.  I choked on my tea when I read that I would be giving a transferable, irrevocable, perpetual license to use my content to this 3rd party site.

Facebook owns EVERYTHING you post onto their site.  So does Twitter.  So does MySpace.   So do most of the rest of them.

But who takes time to read the EULA and the TOS?  They just blindly click "Accept".

Thanks for the Fair Warning, Deb.

I'm just as guilty of not reading as everyone else Debbie.  That's why I was so shocked when I did take the time to read the T.O.S. this morning.

It's a necessary evil to give to Facebook etc control of our info, Fred - but I'm not about to give that right to a 3rd party!

Hey, Deb - I have seen a number of Syndication / Distribution Services and Websites like you are talking about ("All of your Social Media under one Site").   Several of them posted or mentioned here on AR.

Can you give a Clue as to which one you referring to, please?  I want to make sure I did not sign up.

Thank you!

Thank you again, Deb.

I had bookmarked it, but not signed up for it yet.

Next time I am in Massachusetts, lunch is on me!

A little scary when you think what could be done with all that info. Don't post anything you don't want the world to see is a good rule of thumb.

That's a good rule of thumb to follow Douglas.

Guilty as charged. I recently had the "Geek Squad" debug my PC due to an incredible amount of pop ups. Come to find out in one of those TOS's I agreed to it...   I now pay closer attention.

I'm so sorry to hear that you got caught by one of these "buried in the fine print" TOS, Eric!

Profit from my two decades of experience

Deb~makes sense, I hardly ever skim the terms of service anymore, I saw one of those all-in-one sites and all most signed up, thanks for the heads-up.
