In most cases, you are allowed to ship one POV overseas at governement expense.   Dual military are able to ship two POV's.

So what happens with your other POV that you have in the mainland?  Most servicemembers choose to either sell it in the mainland and buy a second car when they get here or they pay for it on their own by shipping it through companies such as Matson and Horizon Lines.  The cost is approximately $1000 for one POV.

When I left the mainland in 2003 to PCS to Hawaii, I shipped one car at government expense by driving it from Ft. Carson, Colorado down to Lewisville, Texas.  The governement paid for me to drive one of my POV's to Lewisvillen and then after I shipped it, I was reimbursed for the cost of the plane ticket to fly back to Colorado.

We took the second POV and drove to Los Angeles where we shipped it at our own expense.  Because the government would have had to pay for us to fly from Colorado to Honolulu, we were able to get reimbursed for driving our car to Los Angeles UP TO THE COST that it would have been for an airline ticket.

This is what I have learned since then:

There United States Navy operates something called "Opportune Lift Program".  This program allows active duty military, retirees, unmarried widows/widowers of retired service members and DOD civilian employees moving under permanent change of station orders.

These eligbile members can ship a car, van, truck or boat.  No personal items are allowed to be shipped in the vehicle.

The ships travel between Honolulu and San Diego ONLY.  You must be present to put your POV on the ship but you can have someone with a power of attorney at the other end to pick it up for you.  THERE IS NO STORAGE AVAILABLE.  SOMEONE MUST BE THERE TO PICK UP THE VEHICLE.

The cost is completely free if the type of ship used is a "drive on / drive off".  If the ship used requires a crane to load the vehicles then the charge is $60.

John-You must have had a great time in Germany with the Mustang.  Did you sell it there or bring it back with you?  What were your two duty stations there?  Aloha,
