Three local communities have gates erected that limit access. .....So what? ... They erected those gates across publicly funded and maintained roads.
The reasoning is that they want to limit the amount of traffic "cutting through" their communities. I can see their point, but, on the other hand, I helped pay for those roads and should be able to use them if I wish.
The Horry county council took a good hard look at the situation and decided to have the gates taken down by a vote of 9 to 3.
One of those communities is now suing to take over responsibility for those roads including the maintenance aspect. Apparently this lawsuit could have National repercussions and is being monitored closely.
Does your community have too much traffic cutting through it? Simple... erect a gate and never-mind who who is paying for those roads.
Seems like the problem stems from an age old practice that developers use. Build the roads, sell the dirt around them, build the houses, pocket your profits and then hand over maintenance of those roads to local government by abandonment.
Do you live in a gated community?
Who owns and maintains those roads?

Update:
A judge has just ruled that gates blocking off one entrance to a retirement community will be allowed stay in place while the lawsuit makes its way through the court system 9-11-07
