Container Gardens Brighten the Indoors

There is certainly no doubt that Winter is upon us.  Outdoor warmth with its greenery and colorful floral displays will be missed for the next few months.  One summertime trend that has become popular in the past few years is combination planting, which groups different plants into one container.  It is especially suitable for smaller patios and decks.  As the days grow shorter, why not create arrangements that will thrive indoors through the winter months?

The most important rule of thumb in choosing plants that will cohabitate in one pot, is to be sure that they have the same light, temperature and water requirements.  Ferns paired with cacti would not be a happy mix.  Choose plants with variable heights, colors and textures to add interest to your container.  Start with one showcase plant, add another that tucks under or fills in, then add one that's trailing.  If your indoor space is not well lit, it may be best to bypass blooming varieties.  Simply choose plants with colorful or showy foliage that can tolerate dimmer light.  Examples would be ferns, caladium, cannas or coleus.

Don't forget edibles, either.  Smaller varieties of greens, herbs, even dwarf bananas can be successfully grown indoors.  Snip some for a salad and watch them grow right back!

Brighten up your indoor living space this winter with beautiful combination planters.  You will be one step ahead in the Spring when you can simply move them outdoors!

Great suggestions! I have a brown thumb. I manage to keep my Aerogarden alive, but not much beyond that. My husband apologizes to any plant I bring home. I have killed two tomato plants in my topsy turvy so far.
