Protect Yourself From Credit Card Fraud

By
Real Estate Agent with Ask Gina & Company with Pearson Smith Realty

Tis' the season when those convenient little pieces of plastic get used often thus opening us up to potential danger in terms of credit card fraud. But there are ways to protect ourselves and our financial health thanks to some tips from our local Loudoun County Sheriffs Office Financial Crimes Unit. Check them out:

·Make sure you sign your cards as soon as they arrive.

·Carry your credit cards separately from your wallet in a zippered compartment, a business card holder, or a small pouch.

·Keep a record of your account numbers, their expiration dates, and the phone number and address of each company in a secure place.

·Keep an eye on your card during a transaction, and get it back as quickly as possible.

·Void incorrect receipts and destroy carbon copies.

·Save receipts to compare with billing statements.

·Open bills promptly and reconcile accounts monthly, just as you would your checking account.

·Report any questionable charges immediately and in writing to the card issuer.

·Notify card companies in advance of any change of address.

·NEVER give out your credit card over the phone unless you are making the call to a company you know is reputable.

·If you have questions about a company, check it out with your local consumer protection office or the BBB.

·If you lose your card/change cards or realize that it has been lost or stolen, immediately report it to the insurer of the credit card. (By law, once you report the card lost or stolen, you have no more responsibility for unauthorized purchases except for a $50 charge.)

We encourage you to take a moment and follow these great tips in order to protect your accounts and avoid headaches and heartache this holiday season and all year long! Your credit card health is a critical part of your financial life!
