I sometimes think of the services that a Realtor® provides as being comparable to that of a good restaurant.  And, when I think of my  favorite dining establishments, the reason becomes abundantly clear.

There are only a few places that I constantly rely on for dining and I am always drawn back to them for the same reasons.

  • Reliability - Since my diet is mainly seafood an establishment has to have a reputation for having everything fresh. I never want to patronize a place that is not reliable in their quality.
  • Consistency - I am predictable enough to have a few favorite dishes that I repeatedly order and I do not want to be disappointed that they are not as good as they were the previous time.
  • Service - The service at my favorite restaurant goes way beyond what you would expect.  On one occasion, I had a concern about the way a meal had been cooked.  The manager was at my table in a flash, literally on bended knee apologizing. It reminded me of an old Monty Python sketch in which the diner complained about a dirty fork. You may be familiar with it - The Restaurant Sketch

So, what is the connection between a real estate agent and a fine restaurant?

In real estate, we need to provide a very consistent menu.  In my case the main course is Buyer Agency.  That is to say, I help people find their perfect home and guide them through the process of procuring it with the least amount of stress.

Just  as it is with a good restaurant, there have to be people who return and send their friends, time and again.  And, the only way to gain that kind of loyalty is through reliability, consistency and great service.

So, if you are searching for a home in the Metrowest area, please go to my website and check out the menu. It will be my sincere pleasure to serve you.

Well said Claudette.  It's what makes us recommend that service/person (restaurant) to our family and friends too!  Congrats on the feature!

Claudette, Thank you for your post.  Your analogies are well thought out and I agree.  I agree with what you said and always strive for the most excellent result...Although I never get a tip !

Great analogy, Claudette.  I strive for excellence.  But unlike a good server in a restaurant I don't get tips!  lol

Right on! Buyers and Sellers who have a great experience with their real estate agent are much more likely to refer their friends and family...

Claudette: Excellent post. The bad word gets out ten fold as to your reputation but the good word is powerful. Make sure your clients are spreading the good word.

Lee & Pamela:

In this business I think we are very sensitive to referrals and recommendations.

Marsha:

Realtors getting a tip? That is an interesting thought.

Michael:

Customer service is absolutely key in restaurants and in real estate.

Marsha:

So many people think real estate agents are wealthy. I do not think they would be inclined to give us a tip.

Pam:

Absolutely.

Jim:

Keep a good thought for that good word reaching the right people.

Love the analogy, so true.   Service is everything, it's not a department....it's an attitude!!

Don't forget free mints and a clean bathroom!!

I used to tend bar, I wonder if that helps? =)

Patricia:

Exactly - attitude is everything.

Phil:

Ha! I can imagine you tending bar.  I'll bet you were great at it. Such a personality - and listening to everyone's troubles.  Just like real estate.

Right and you have to decide if you are McDonald's or. ..  oops I don't like where this is going.  But I do like your blog post.   Thank you for pointing out all that a Realtor has to offer. . .

Don't worry. I think I mentioned the "M" word in an earlier comment.  It's difficult not to in this context.

Claudette, great analogy.  I love the perspective.  I always think of it as emergency room triage.  There's the sense of urgency to diagnose the needs at the first meeting.  Scanning your knowledge base to determine the best treatment/location/price range and then actually providing the care, monitoring the progress and finishing up their proceedure so that the patient may leave back out into the world in even better shape!

Carey:

It sounds like you have a medical background.

Stephen:

In this business and in most that deal with the public - absolutely.

Renee:

Referrals and repeat clients are what makes the world go around.
