High heels for men?!

By
Real Estate Agent with Surterre Properties

Dressing up for the holidays?

Did you know that high heels were invented as men's footwear 500 years ago!

Spirit Magazine reports that high-heeled boots were a good way to keep men's feet in stirrups while riding. It's said that Central Asian invaders gave Europeans the idea in the 16th century.

Then the French queen, Catherine de'Medici, began wearing the trend to boost her height because in some cultures height is equated with social status. And soon after other women started following the trend as well.

So why did men stop wearing them? Besides the fact that they look incredibly uncomfortable, cultural anthropologists suggest that once something becomes popular with women, men typically stop wearing or using that particular item.

So I guess while getting ready for your next holiday party don't give your wife grief for wearing heels, there really is a purpose for them and we started it (but were smart enough to make the switch to flats ;)

Ha! Well that figures! LOL. Seems to me that men aren't as "body balanced" as women so would have been harder for them to walk in. Probably just for riding horses back then...darn that french queen anyway.

Hi Michael - Okay, maybe men wore heals 500 years ago, but I don't think spiked heels were ever the rage for men!  : )  I have to say I am glad that it faded away!

Michael, The heels are very much in style in Texas.  Men from ranch hands all the way to the presidents of some of the banks. Rancher could not survive with out their Tony Lama Boots. :):)

Having lived in Oklahoma & Texas I can verify Don's word about the Tony Lama's!  I would also like to know about the kilt - will that be your next post?

I am very happy that this fashion statement died many years ago!! I probably would have broken my legs and ankles! LOL

A blog about the kilt sounds intriguing....and so does the Tony Lamas! Stay tuned.

Thanks for all your comments. Have a great week!

Having more than one pair of Tony Lamas, I'd say the fashion hasn't quite worn out.  Though I've never seen Tony's with spike heels!

Erby,

Can't say that I have either...not even for gal's. The spikes would go right thru into the ground. It would definitely be hard to walk on a grassy or dirt lawn.

If men stopped wearing things that become popular with women, when will men stop wearing pants and switch over to kilts?
