He said, "I did 65 transactions BACK in 2006, so yeah I'm a top producer"

Truth? So tell me, what is strange about this statement?

Too often we talk about our current levels of production on what we did in the past.  Even though at one time we did 65 deals, now we are closer to 10.

So, tell me what is wrong about this statement?  I'll give ya three...

Well, for starters...  If your business has suffered in last few years, be honest with yourself...  Be realistic and take the bull by the horns.  Once you start to be honest with yourself, you can start to get into productive action again.  The RIGHT type of productive action.

Secondly, your business planning should always be created to help you get to whatever next level you are trying to get to.  So if you still think you are a 65 transaction agent, then the business planning you are doing on paper is going to be misleading to you.  Your daily goals and actions are based upon an agent that is doing 65 transactions, and your next goal is 80...  But how are you going to get to 80 if you are not at 65 right now?  So if you are honest with yourself, then you can work on going from 10 to 65 this year, and 80 the  next year.

And lastly.  Sometimes we embellish our numbers, and tell everyone that we are a 65 transaction agent to make us feel better.  And to appease our... um... ego?  So, if you are willing to lie about something like this, you may be willing to lie about the daily goals you are setting for yourselfto make sure you reach your numbers.  You say you are going to call 10 people a day, but you only call 3...  Would you then be more inclined to put 10, to be sure that your numbers look good in the end?

Sometimes honesty with ourselves goes just as far as honesty with others...

Cheers!

-Chris

Hi Chris,

Our best year ever was 2005; and we are still trying to get back there.  Good topic.

If I hear one more person talk about their glory days, I may scream. My glory days are ahead, and I am still working toward them. Talked to someone recently who had phenomenal numbers in the early part of this decade, over 20 million...but doing 20% of that now. I hope one day to achieve that kind of success, but theirs is gone since they are still working with an ancient business model. I don't know if they can recreate that success level, but there's no point in reliving the past - it just isn't profitable.

We can also look at this from the angle that an agent who didn't do too well in 2006 still has the potential to do GREAT in 2010/2011.  Your points about being true to yourself and doing some solid business planning still apply no matter how good or bad we did a few years ago.  It's all about staying relevant TODAY, connecting with people authentically, and following through with integrity.

Thanks for a great post, Chris!

Another great blog Chris.. The question however would be in 2006, who wasn't doing 65 transactions or more a year.. Sadly I wasn't in the industry than.. I didn't come in until may of last year, rock bottom of the market. To me a top producing agent means your consistant, you may not close as much as you closed at the peak of the market but your are always out there looking for new opportunites and meeting new people to add to your database so those contacts can eventually become clients and closed transactions.

Congrats on this featured post! You're spot on Chris, people who live in the past certainly can not be effective and successful in the present, it's just not possible. Love how you speak the truth. Even if it might hurt agents that think in this way, honesty might be what they need the most for them to move forward into the present and prepare strategically for the future.

2006 is a lifetime ago in today's real estate world.  I'm curious about now or last year.

I also think being honest with yourself is a great way to work towards the next level.
