For 10 cities in the Denver metro area this spring should mean a brand new citywide wireless network will be in place. In a go-around a law effort the Colorado Wireless Communities is getting closer to signing a contract with a provider.
The go-around is due to a 2005 law the state legislature passed last year prohibiting city governments from building their own wireless networks for the citizens. Backed by (oh what a surprise) Comcast and Qwest, the law passed. In the end the law just prevents cities from using tax dollars to build the wireless networks.
On one hand I feel a tinge of sorry for the big boys like Qwest and Comcast who have laid the groundwork for the wireless & cable systems. But on the other hand I feel they are getting in the way of progress. Why should we have to pay so much for something that is not that expensive anymore?
I for one would probably still pay my Comcast Cable bill, because having high speed internet is right up there on the Hierarchy of Needs List with AIR! Knowing how governments tend to screw things up or look the other way does not give me warm fuzzies when it comes to providing my internet access.
In the end, Realtors are not the only ones faces future changes. Disintermediation is happening on many fronts.
What does the future hold for us?
Kristal, Having my 24/7 air card is right up there with breathing. I have had to do without for sometime, due to a bad port, in two separate computers! I have had 4 new air cards because, no way I could own two identical PCs and both have a bad connective port...wrong!
Today the first one was fixed and I am again 24/7 connected. Now I can breath again. Will be sending the other pc back for repair so I will then have a backup, just in case. The hotel we have been staying has free internet connection. Our first night's stay and after 4 hours with their tech support, found out that OUR room did not have a signal. We changed our room at midnight.
So NO I will never give up my wireless and trust...not at this time!
Good post ,as always,
