Wireless network in metro denver citiesFor 10 cities in the Denver metro area this spring should mean a brand new citywide wireless network will be in place.  In a go-around a law effort the Colorado Wireless Communities is getting closer to signing a contract with a provider.

The go-around is due to a 2005 law the state legislature passed last year prohibiting city governments from building their own wireless networks for the citizens.  Backed by (oh what a surprise) Comcast and Qwest, the law passed.  In the end the law just prevents cities from using tax dollars to build the wireless networks.

On one hand I feel a tinge of sorry for the big boys like Qwest and Comcast who have laid the groundwork for the wireless & cable systems.  But on the other hand I feel they are getting in the way of progress.  Why should we have to pay so much for something that is not that expensive anymore?

I for one would probably still pay my Comcast Cable bill, because having high speed internet is right up there on the Hierarchy of Needs List with AIR!  Knowing how governments tend to screw things up or look the other way does  not give me warm fuzzies when it comes to providing my internet access.

In the end, Realtors are not the only ones faces future changes.  Disintermediation is happening on many fronts.

What does the future hold for us?

Kristal, Having my 24/7 air card is right up there with breathing. I have had to do without for sometime, due to a bad port, in two separate computers! I have had 4 new air cards because, no way I could own two identical PCs and both have a bad connective port...wrong!

Today the first one was fixed and I am again 24/7 connected. Now I can breath again. Will be sending the other pc back for repair so I will then have a backup, just in case.  The hotel we have been staying has free internet connection. Our first night's stay and after 4 hours with their tech support, found out that OUR room did not have a signal. We changed our room at midnight.

So NO I will never give up my wireless and trust...not at this time!

Good post ,as always,

I for one would not want the government involved. i feel the less involved in my life the better, until they can get their act togather.

Margaret ~ although I think it would be an awesome selling point for a city to have citywide wireless networks in place. I'm with you, I wouldn't give up my access. Wired or air card without it I'm out of business.  It's just not worth taking the chance.

Rob ~ oh I think they will do ok, but I'm not sure about perfect.  I need perfect, I bet you do too!

I like the new computers with high speed broadband access built-in but can't help wondering about potential problems - it's easier to switch an air card than a computer.

I'd keep my current access for at least the first year after the citywide wireless network was put in place... so I could avoid the typical glitches that happen early on with new networks.  Even then, I'd probably keep an air card for when I'm outside the area.

Kristal... you walk your cat?!  I never knew someone who did that.

Sharon ~ True air cards are easy to come by.

Leanne ~ Good plan, wait and see how it works then decide based on performance.  Actually I don't have a cat...it was my silly way of saying Teri slipped in while I was responded to the previous comments...  I think if I had a really BIG cat, that a mountain lion, I would have to walk it...

LOL... oops!  I guess I'd never heard that 'expression' before.  I've had the same thing happen to me quite a bit - that someone is leaving a comment as I'm responding to others.

Leanne, don't worry, it just came to mind, I think I made it up, but then who knows what is trapped in this mind... :)

Minneapolis has wireless on their radar too.  I have PDAnet on my treo (makes my phone a modem), and can get on the net anywhere anytime so, Yeah, I guess I'd give it a try since I'd have a backup with my phone.

I guess I'm missing something here - my town has wireless in the downtown area, and they're talking about expanding it into some of the residential areas within the next year.  I thought that was pretty cool, until I read some of the responses here.  Why wouldn't that be a good thing?  What am I missing that's causing everyone to seemingly saying it's not a good thing?

I have a buyer client moving here, purchasing a home in the million dollar plus range, and he's just thrilled to pieces about it.  It's one of the things that swayed him to Portsmouth over some of the surrounding towns.  He can take his laptop to downtown cafes and coffee shops and work away to his heart's content.

I'm really interested in hearing why this isn't such a great idea.....many thanks in advance for the clarification.

Ann ~ you aren't missing anything. If you have it and are confident in the consistency of the service, that's great.  I was concerned about the inconsistency and lack of controll if something went wrong.  Having a wireless citywide network would be a very strong selling point.

Lisa ~ It's nice to have backups to your backups!
