You probably won’t find many sellers who consider the holidays an ideal time to have their Hamilton County home on the market. Not only is it inconvenient to have strangers traipsing around during the most wonderful time of the year, it’s also inefficient, since the pool of buyers generally dwindles in favor of trips to the mall! But let’s face it, sometimes what’s ideal and what’s reality are two very different things.
So for those Hamilton County homeowners faced with trying to sell a house as well as preserve some holiday good cheer, here are some helpful holiday home staging tips:
Safety first. It's Indiana. Snow happens, but that's no excuse for sloppy outdoor home maintenance. No matter how busy you are, be sure you have a clear path, free from snow and ice, from the driveway to your front door. Nothing dampens the buying spirit more quickly than a painful slip or fall.
Thoughtful touches. Winter footwear isn’t as easy to take off as the sandals and flip flops donned by warm weather buyers. To make it easy for visitors to remove their shoes and boots, consider setting a bench or chair inside the front door. A basket with a few old (but still pretty!) towels in it makes it easy to clean up accidental drips.
Simplicity reigns. You’ll save yourself stress and help buyers envision your home as their home if you stick to simple, neutral holiday decorations. A beautiful wreath on the door to welcome visitors, twinkling white lights and a tastefully decorated tree are perfectly appropriate. A giant inflatable Santa in the front yard and gaudy flashing lights set to music are not. Sorry. And remember: when it comes to staging your home for buyers, less is always more!
Take heart. Trying to sell your home during the holidays may not be ideal, but it’s not all bad news, either. Buyers willing to take time from their busy schedules to tour homes during the holidays are usually serious customers who are as committed to buying a home as you are to selling yours!
