More than just holiday miracles for a Rich Man

Services for Real Estate Pros with Immediate Home Solutions & U.S. Financial Funding, LLC

Over the last 5 years, there have been many incidents and miracles worth writing about for they do happen,  but that will have to wait for other blogs.

This story begins last year on July 4th and continues… Last year I went through a horrific car accident on July 5, 2009.  Here is a picture with my family at an outing on July 4th (the youngest was with Grandma), where everything was fine. The next day, my life was changed.

July 4

On July 5, my son had to go on a plane as an unaccompanied minor.  For those of you that know, you must be at the airport by a certain time or they won’t let him fly.  My son and I had gone in the SUV and backed out of the garage and waited for the rest of the family to come out.

This was summer time, so it was hot.  The car was running with the AC on.  After a period of time,

I got out of the car to go into the house to help spur the others to move faster or we would be  too late for Aaron to fly.

As I got out of the SUV and closed the door, the car started to go backwards.  Now, we live on a basement lot and the SUV was parallel to the house at the end of top of the “T” of the driveway.

Where car was parked

As I saw this, I couldn't believe the car started rolling backwards straight to the neighbor's house.  I immediately feared for my son.

Neighbor's House

Without hesitation, I opened the door and jumped in the car to hit the brakes.  As I did this, the car went off the driveway and started rolling, which made me lurch as I was trying to apply the brake.  As this happened, I fell out of the car and at the same time my right foot got stuck between the brake pedal and the floorboard.

So here I am, with my foot stuck and I'm hanging upside down, outside of the SUV, facing the sky as my head is banging on the ground and the door is opening and closing on my head.  While this is going on, I'm watching in dread as the neighbor's house is approaching and I'm thinking, "this is going to hurt".

As the house approaches, the car suddenly turns to the left and spares me the pain of going through the house.  Instead, much to my surprise, the car changed direction with the lay of the land and I started rolling down the hill on the side of the house.

I am now heading down a small hill, picking up speed, heading directly for a metal fence.

                       Hill with fence

Now I knew this was going to hurt.  The bottom line is that I go through the fence, tear my right leg to the bone with a gaping hole from just above my knee almost to my groin and break my pelvis completely in half, from one side to the other and crush the right side as the car rolls over my body.

The paramedics arrive and have to pull pieces of the fence out of my body and get me in an ambulance.  Unfortunately, I remember everything up until that point when I passed out from the pain of my injuries, both external and internal.

The first day I go through 3 operations and spend a total of 13 ½ hours on an operating table where I died 3 times.  They did the first operation and put me in post-op, not realizing the extent of my internal injuries.  While I was coming to During this time, I was given 3 complete blood transfusions.

Over the next 10 days, I underwent a total of 7 operations and spent 2 weeks in ICU where they thought I would be paralyzed from the neck down.  I started to get feeling and movement in the upper extremities and then they told me that I would never walk again and if they couldn't get rid of the massive infection in my leg, that they would have to cut it off.

I spent a month in the hospital and 7 months in a hospital bed unable to walk.  Each day for hours at a time, I willed myself to move.  It started with my big toe and a twitch in my thigh.

I am now on a cane. From not moving, to going to a wheelchair, then a walker and now on a cane.  Not too bad for someone who was not supposed to walk.

A true miracle.

As I started getting better, I started to have problems with vision and dizziness to name a few of the symptoms.  This was around May, 2010.  I went to the doctor for tests and after a while, I got worse.

I went through numerous bouts where I couldn’t see, speak, or stand.  I had bad headaches and would fall down.  I had spells that were a mixture of a seizure and stroke rolled into one and went through this about 30 times a day.

The doctor then admitted to the hospital for some tests.  What was supposed to be a few days wound up being for over 6 weeks during the summer.

I have now been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disease that is known to have afflicted around 15 people in the country and I am one of the lucky few. It is called Opsoclonus Myoclonos with Ataxia.

I will tell about this in another blog.  What I have realized through all of this is that no matter what happens, someone always has it worse and I am thankful for what I have and my family.

The main orthopedic doctor that I saw said that there were numerous people in wheelchairs that he saw that had not medical reason for being in one and yet, here I was.  I’m not supposed to walk and yet, I am.

It is very difficult to gauge the human spirit and will power.

I have a wonderful family and want to be here for them.  I will not be denied the opportunity to be with them because someone said that I couldn't.  It wasn't said by me.

I have a lot to be thankful for.  I have a wonderful wife who is by my side through thick and thin, 3 children who understand that Dad is not exactly the same as he was, but may be again.  I have a business that I love and enjoy and good friends who are there for me.

I know that I have been blessed and it has been said that He will not put on you more than you can handle.  I do sometimes wonder why He feels that I can handle so much, however, there is a reason.  I do not know what that reason is yet, but I strive forward to work on figuring it out.

It may be to bring hope and a positive thought to others that it's not as bad as one might think.

Each day is a miracle for me that I can move forward with my life and celebrate each day with my family.

Holidays make it that much more special because I am here for them.

Happy Holidays to you and your family.  Make the most of them, for you never know when it could change.

What can be said other than I hope by now you believe in Guardian Angels, this is truly an amazing story with an amazing outcome.  Jeff your a very lucky man and should each and every day thank the man up above. The tenacity that you have shown not only to live, but to walk again and run a business, should be a model for all those that have far less afflictions then you. I commend you and pray that the doctors can find a cure to your condition, and know that what ever happens you will never give up.

Best of luck to you and your beautiful family

Hi J,

I do thank the man up above for what he has given me and allowed me to keep.  I am very thankful for what I have. I never discount what someone else is going through because that is that person's pain and problem and it shouldn't be taken away from them.

I just hope that I can provide inspiration to others and let them know there is more that can be had and accomplished.

Hi Wende,

Thank you for the kind words.  To get ahead and succeed in business or in life, you have to have determination.

I am very thankful that I can make your day.  It helps to make mine knowing that.

And as you said, Never Give Up!
