Tips for the Kitchen for Custom Homes NC

Kitchen countertops come with more choices than ever - but to keep them looking new requires some cleaning tricks. Try these tips from NC custom homes builders.

Custom Homes NC | Kitchen Countertop Cleaning TipsFormica® Laminate Countertop Cleaning Tips

Formica laminate countertops are a less expensive option, and they've been installed in kitchens for decades.  Today's laminates are stronger and more durable than ever before, and there are even great high definition products like Formica's fx180.

To clean laminate countertops:

USE a clean, damp, nonabrasive cotton cloth and mild liquid detergent or household cleaner. Do not flood the countertop.  A nylon bristled hand or vegetable brush can also be used, especially on sculpture and dimensional finish laminates.

DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners and scouring pads.  Avoid burning the countertop by using a trivet or pot holder when cooking, and DO NOT place hot containers directly on the surface.

Granite Countertop Cleaning Tips

Granite countertops are one of the most popular countertops found in NC custom homes. They're made of natural granite, which is a tough and durable stone. Granite countertops should last a lifetime if cared for properly.  Granite countertops should be sealed at installation, and resealed by the homeowner once or twice a year to stay looking their best.

To clean granite countertops:

USE warm, soapy water for everyday cleaning.

DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.

Stainless Steel Countertop Cleaning Tips

Stainless steel countertops can add a professional look to kitchen, but the material can scratch easily. This means that when the surface is cleaned, it may take some extra care.

To clean stainless steel countertops:

USE warm, soapy water and avoid harsh cleaners. Special maintenance powders are also helpful in maintaining the shine, when rubbed in the direction of the grain.

DO NOT USE anything that has an acid base. DO NOT leave food sitting on the countertop unless it is on a plate or other buffer, because acidic foods can stain a stainless steel countertop.

Quartz countertops cost more than many options, but they're one of the easiest kitchen countertop surfaces to keep like-new.

To clean quartz countertops:

USE warm, soapy water and a soft cloth.

DO NOT worry about polishing, buffing, sealing, or reconditioning - this kind of countertop shouldn't need it. DO NOT allow high levels of heat to come in contact with your quartz countertop.

Wood Countertop Cleaning Tips

Wood countertops are more rare in NC custom homes, partly due to the high amount of maintenance required.  It's more common to find a wood countertop on an island than in the full kitchen.

To clean wood countertops:

USE a steel scraper to remove hardened food or other substances, then use warm, soapy water. Every month, NC custom home builders recommend that the homeowner rub a layer of special wood oil into the surface.

DO NOT USE too much water when cleaning. If the surface is soaked or isn't dried properly, the wood can crack and warp.

Choose the kind of countertop that best suits your budget and your lifestyle, then follow these easy tips to keep that kitchen countertop looking fabulous!
