A View of North Heights Alternative High School in Amarillo

I recently read an article about an Amarillo student and want to share the story.  A student that was to attend an alternative school was worried about attending the alternative school of North Heights.  She was concerned about fighting.  However, she found teachers that really care about her and the other students there instead.  She felt so welcome.  Therefore, she became excited about attending a school where they want to really find out who she is and what she wants out of life.

A core group of students created a documentary on alternative schools to rebuff stereotypes of the students who attend.  Some of the students attending there are troubled.  Some are there for the PASS program (Priority Achieve Success) so they can graduate early.

Teachers here help students tailor their education to fit their individual goals.  Students even discover if they truly are on the right path with their goals.  One student aspired to be in auto mechanics, but through class courses, he discovered a knack for public speaking.

After reading the article, I find that a better environment, smaller classes and teachers more involved in the education of children provide a higher success rate in high school students that graduate and go on to achieve their goals.

Tom a very thoughtful post.  It is great to see caring teachers.  Most students just need a little attention and they really do want to learn.
