In the late 90's and early 2000's it was all about the bigger the better; from super size meals, SUVs to jumbo loans. It seems the 2010's are going to be about the ultra small, nano and mini. I'm having flash backs to the 70's when everything was econo size. Remember those tiny Toyotas and Datsuns? Since my blog on ultra-small homes I recently came across another ultra small home I thought I would share; although I don't even think you can call it ultra-small it's more of a mini or egg/pod home.
The ultra-small home I blogged about before was built in Japan, this pod/egg home was built in Beijing, China by architect Dai Haifei. Haifei is 24 years old and has come up with a way to live rent free. He has built himself a mobile, solar powered egg/pod shaped house. Sort of reminds me of the Mork's spaceship from the 1978 sitcom Mork and Mindy or a modern version of a sod house.
The egg/pod is a 6 ft high and made out of bamboo, wood chippings, sack bags and grass seed that should grow by spring 2011; so it just fits in on a sidewalk and blends into it's surroundings. This home doesn't have a/c but it does have a solar panel on the roof that powers a lamp. It's cost 6427 yen to build according to China Daily, which is around $1,000. I'm not sure the U.S. is ready for this type of housing just yet, but it sure is interesting.
