My wife Diane likes to watch the television show about Sarah Palin's Alaska. I will admit that I have been watching it with her. I watch it for the beauty of Alaska. She watches it for...well...other reasons.
This past week Kate Gosselin and her 8 kids showed up to go camping with the Palins. Now in all fairness, Ms. Gosselin is not a country girl. Camping is not her cup of tea. And I don't know who the producer was that thought up the brainy idea to have her go camping with the Palins. And after watching the show, I kind of wonder if they didn't already know ahead of time that taking a city girl and putting her in a cold and wet setting would make for interesting tv.
Poor Kate was absolutely miserable the whole time. She was freezing and cold and wet. The kids, on the other hand, seemed to have a great time. They were out exploring and gathering firewood and doing the things you do when you camp. But not Kate. She stayed under a shelter the entire time. And once she had had enough, she threw in the towel and made the decision to leave. Now there was only one little problem with leaving. The kids wanted to stay. So in an effort to get them to do what she wanted, this mother of eight manipulated her kids by saying, "Okay, you're a Palin now, not a Gosselin."
After she made that statement, the camera zoomed in on one of the girls. You could tell that her young mind was mulling over her mother's statement. She wanted to stay, but she didn't want to not be a Gosselin. So she caved and went obediently with her mother.
Now, I'm not here to criticize Ms. Gosselin. I am, however, reminded of an application to the world of Real Estate. And the application is that you cannot manipulate others in Real Estate. You can bully, but you cannot manipulate. At least not in the way Kate manipulated her kids.
Or can you???
