Yesterday I wrote a post on becoming more approachable on AR--it was all about the power of wearing a name-tag. Today I read another fantastic article on the topic and wanted to share more about how to make that name-tag stand out!

So many of us on AR are super creative--so let's put it to good use! This idea is great for getting noticed at  networking events, but has further applications as well. Why not give some of these creative ideas (again from one of my favorite bloggers, Scott Ginsberg) a try. I think they are utterly fantastic! You might even try converting these ideas to the AR environment by playing with your profile picture or the "signatures" that go along with your posted comments.

The question is: what if there was more than just your name on your name tag? You can read Scott's full article here, How to make your name tag stand out, but here are my favorite creative name tag ideas:

Creative Position Description
Networking meetings, conventions, jobs or other business gatherings require nametags to identify people with their company or department. But an overlooked addition to your nametag in a business setting is to write what you do, not just your position. Instead of “Oscar Meyer,” write “I sell hot dogs to Walmart.” I promise everyone at the meeting will come up and say hello! Who knows, maybe they’ll want to do business with the person whose nametag made them smile!

Nickname
Most people have some sort of nickname they have been called at some point in their lives. The best thing about nicknames is that there’s always a story behind them. As you discover these fascinating stories, you develop trust, levity and create a friendly bond between two people. After all, if you saw a nametag that said, “Laszlo the King”, wouldn’t you want to find out the story behind it?

Activities
Write down your favorite sport, pastime or interest. Not only does this allow you to discuss something about which you are passionate, but someone else is bound to enjoy the same activities! Who knows, perhaps you will meet your next teammate or book club member!

Quotation
Write your favorite quotation or bible verse on your nametag. This is a brilliant method to encourage conversations beyond the small talk level. Many people have some one-liner, old saying, proverb or verse by which they live their lives—so why shouldn’t we share them? Wisdom like this is meant to be passed on to other people!

Number
I LOVE this idea! Get creative and add a number to your nametag. Simply write a number in the bottom corner of your nametag that signifies something. For example, write the number of children you have, miles traveled to the event, number of speeding tickets received, amount of pizza you have eaten in one night, anything! But no matter what the number signifies, people will find out why it’s there.

Do you have any ideas to add to the list??

What a great way to spark conversations anytime but especially at conventions when everyone is milling around the coffee in the hall.

How about using two name tags? Your name on one in BIG, EASY TO READY LETTERS... and a second tag right under it with one of your (Scott's) great suggestions?

Hi Chrissy

Enjoyed very much your blogs and suggestions. I am brand new to this profession after having been a doctor and mother of 5 for most of my life. That's a long story in itself which you could read a little about on my Remax blog at accessphilly,com/agents/celiaglick.

But in the meantime all of this social media stuff is still new to me but very exciting and I'm really getting into it. But I like what you said about what the real point of it all is- to be able to say how many followers you have on Twitter or to really connect with people. And to me , that's what life is really all about- connecting with people and helping other people in a real sincere, deep way.

Thank you for your blog. I'll continue to read what you ahve to say.

Chrissy, Such good suggestions to help with connecting. Love the idea of putting a number on the tag. Mine would have  15539  the # of days we've been married. Thanks for emailing me. Look forward to talking with you.

The best example of a name tag is Bridget McGee which  reads "Mortgage Mama" and she is wonderful.

Go check her out.

Chrissy:  I have worn my own name tag upside down on occasion... and have enjoyed the fun things that have happened as a result.

I like the idea of wearing the name tag upside down.  If you were a short sale specialist you could even use it to your advantage and add a creative saying to it like "upside down?  I can help"....then your name tag upside down underneath it.

Chrissy:  Sometimes I wear my name tag upside down on purpose.  People will usually stop me, and ask me if I KNOW that it is upside down.  I will say that yes, I do know that.  And then say that the reason I wear it upside down... is that most days I am SOOOO busy that I forget what my own name is... so with the tag like that, I can look down... and, with it upside down, I can read and then remember what my name is.

It is goofy, it is dorky, but it works... and has made me money.  <smile>
