Mental Toughness for Success - My Reflections 2

By
Education & Training with ToniHogan.com

This series is going to be a bit more challenging than I thought. The reason is the book is packed with so much valuable information. Since I only intend to give my reflections and not a book review I have to attempt to restrain my commentary. :-)

The title of Chapter 1 is "Success and How to Have It." There are so many opinions on how to attain success. There are countless resources that provide a "proven" success formula. Many of them are motivational. This was also mentioned by another blogger in Encouraging Words... Mindset of the Prosperous. The path to true success begins with a renewing of the mind. The renewing of the mind begins with understanding the will of God as it relates to success. Success is not measured by the money or material things that we acquire as a result.

In order to be success or to achieve those things that others deem impossible we must know what our limits are. Amazingly, we are only limited by what we believe God can do through us. We have what we believe we have. Everything as been stored up in the spiritual realm and we must apply pressure to the word and exert our faith in order to bring it into manifestation in the natural realm.

We have to define what success means to us. That is the only way we will know when we have attained our true success. Dr. Hilliard says "the power to define is the power to determine or influence destiny."

As I embarked on this new journey into real estate I begin to prepare myself by seeking knowledge from those who have succeeded. While this knowledge will be useful in formulating a plan for my own success I know that the way they did it will not necessarily work for me. I must glean from their experiences and chart a course for myself.

I realized that the first step in our plan has to be identifying our purpose. Once that has been done we can properly align our success goals with our purpose as we begin to execute our plans.

Dr. Hilliard lists the "major symptoms," or traits of successful people in his book. He expounds on each but I will just list them here.

  • A strong sense of direction
  • A keen sense of understanding
  • A bold courageous attitude
  • A knowledge of how to handle frustrations
  • A knowledge of how to handle rejection
  • A knowledge of how to handle financial pressures
  • A positive self-image
  • A balance motivation
  • A charitable attitude

How many of these traits do you possess? Which ones do you believe are important to success? How do you define YOUR success?

Success scriptures for meditation:

III John 2
Joshua 1:8
Psalm 1:1-3
Psalm 35:27
Job 36:11

Until next time.

Mental toughness is a key element in most things in life. certainly when I'm coaching my High School tennis team, we spend time on it. As an example, at the district tournament last year, one of my girls had to play her oldest friend. They had started to learn the game on the same day, but my girl was the better layer. In ten years she had never lost to her friend, but this was going to be the first time it mattered. And unfortunately, my player did not have the toughness required to forget about who was on the other side of the net and get down to business. It will be a great lesson for us this year.

Simon, it's hard to stay focused when your mind hasn't been "conditioned." Motivating someone has only limited impact if their mind keeps wandering elsewhere. I think you player really need a Venus and Serena talk at that moment. LOL! My daughter just started playing tennis this year. She's wanted to for a while. Maybe you could give her some virtual "coaching." :-)

Linda, I know you are out there. If you need to talk just shoot me an email. Focus on the positive and read those scriptures I posted above.

Toni you are on the right path.  When you internalize these principles you will blossom into revealing and fulfilling your purpose.  Personal development is such a strong part of the path to success.  My mother told me when I was a teen ager and discussing what I wanted to do in life to "Do what the successful do and ask God to guide you".  Many of the gurus, time and experience has shown me that she was right.  I am excited to be in the stands rooting you on in your road to success.  Stay Blessed.

ps. the tickets are booked, I will be in Austin, next month and staying at a very nice Resort with Golf and the whole sha-bang.  That's not too far to travel is it? :)

Toni B., Austin is about 3 hours away. But if I say "golf" I may be able to get my husband to drive. :-)

This book is really good, especially since it is based on biblical principles. I read it a few years ago, but I think now is the perfect time to revisit. And, with blogging my reflections it is more likely to sink in a little deeper and produce fruit. I am excited about getting to the next chapter. :-)

Aha, I knew Toni B.. was coming there first to Golf :) :)

Write this on your mirror: "While this knowledge will be useful in formulating a plan for my own success I know that the way they did it will not necessarily work for me. I must glean from their experiences and chart a course for myself.'  Your own words, and inner thinking are usually the best :) :)

Yes ma'am, Kathy. One of the great things about blogging, as TLW will agree, is it basically provides a journal for the blogger. I retain more when I write it down anyway. So this whole blogging experience will be therapeutic for me. It will definitely help in the mind renewing process. :-)

Yes Kathy and Toni E, I am praying for time to golf more than once.  I am hoping that they don't give women different tee times than the men like they used to.  I dunno, this is the south.  I will be hanging out with multi-millionaires so I am trying to figure out if I should throw a couple of holes.

When doing my personal development training I always take notes while listening.  I now get everything on audio so I can listen as I drive, sleep or exercise to help reinforce and review what I took notes on.

Toni B., it's just not the same to me if I don't write it down. When I work children's ministry on the first Sunday I usually buy a CD of the service. I ALWAYS have to listen to it several times to get the message because my mind is always thinking of creative ideas when I am driving. When I am in service I am constantly taking notes. :-)

As for that "three hours" being down the way, that's only if you like driving. I rarely take a temp assigment farther than 10 miles from home. As you can imagine, I am "conditioning" my mind for the driving I will have to do as a real estate professional.

One day, when I can finally play, I'll buy you a round. I am in the player development program and don't plan to play a round until I have taken each clinic at least once. :-)

Toni E.

You don't like driving, you would hate my work then :) :)  I drive a lot, but this has always been my favorite time to think, reflect, and soak in the beauty of a day.

But then again, I don't drive in cities :) :)

Kathy, I am sure it's the city thing. I developed this disdain for driving when I was a young adult, maybe 18 years old. I worked downtown and used to drive to work. It was awful. I only work 10 miles from home and still hate the traffic I encounter during my commute. If I schedule my appointments just right, maybe I won't have to deal with much traffic. LOL! "Mr. and Mrs. Buyer, I only show homes during non-peak traffic hours. That's between 9:00 am and 11:00 am and 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm." I can dream, can't I?
