Winter Home ImprovementsOnce our Illinois winter is in full swing and the holidays are done, you may find yourself homebound inside your Glenview home more than you realize or prefer. To beat the wintertime blues and cabin fever, work on some simple indoor projects. These can be completed slowly, the kids can help with some, and your home will be on its way to looking fresh for spring.

Replace Interior Doors

Interior doors can be easily replaced during cold winter months. A new blank door slab is the cheapest and easiest route when replacing a damaged or outdated interior door. You may need to paint the door to match the rest of them in the house; this is where the kids could come in handy. This isn't a tough project when you follow the steps to successfully hang a new door.

Add a Kitchen Backsplash

While it can be costly to replace outdated countertops and cabinets, you can update the kitchen area by installing a new backsplash. Tile, metal, glass and a myriad of other materials offer you the opportunity to invest in the perfect new look for your kitchen. Since it's winter, my advice would be to take your time in deciding on the materials and pattern of how the backsplash is to be set. You may be snowed in, so take your time and be creative. Just remember to have it coordinate with the existing cabinets, countertops and appliances in the kitchen so it ties in with your kitchen. One caution - be careful when using smelly adhesives with your house closed up due to cold weather.

Add Hardware

Like I stated above, it's expensive to replace cabinets in your Glenview home or even just refinish them. If your cabinets are in good working order and you just want an updated look to your kitchen, add new hardware to your cabinets. By just replacing your handles and knobs with newer, more contemporary ones, your cabinets will look new without the expense.

Organize your Pantry

A pantry can be tough to keep organized, especially with multiple family members rummaging through it every day. There are many impressive organization kits on the market but not so impressive is their cost. To stay on a budget, you can tackle you own pantry and organize it in just five hours.

Replace Wall Textures

While this project may be a longer one than the rest, removing popcorn ceilings and other outdated drywall textures is the perfect indoor winter home improvement project. You will find that it isn't very difficult, just messy. Keep in mind, joint compound needs to remain above 60 degrees for it to work properly in winter months, and there may be some smell associated with working with these materials.

Refresh Tired Paint

This is particularly important if you have children; ones who have been confined indoors for most of the winter and perhaps have rolling toys and ride-ons in the house. I find that if I wait until the end of winter, my walls need some touch-up painting. You don't necessarily need to repaint an entire space to make it look crisp and refreshed.

If you are planning on having The Marla Schneider Team sell your Glenview home in the spring, start these projects now. When spring comes, there will be multiple chores you can cross off your list while you prepare your home to sell, your home will need less updates, and you will have more time to enjoy the sunshine of spring.
