Can you imagine growing up in this I’m guessing around 600 sqft home with mom, dad and 4 brothers and sisters? That is exactly what a lot of families did in the 1800s, the house was a shelter and a place to sleep nothing more. If you wanted to have fun you went outside and played, there was no TV, Video games. What happened to those times?
There is so much we all take for granted - and much more that perhaps we miss. Thankfully there are reminders such as this that point our thoughts in a different direction from time to time...
Todd,
And along with inventive stuff like central heat, video games, and fast food, our length of life expectancies are significantly different from in the 1800's. That's a good thing.
No bathroom either. You can keep the video games and I will take an indoor restroom!
My little one was just complaining that the internet connection was slow the other day. I'm sending this post to her so she has just one more reason to roll her eyes at me!
Maybe they killed each other off because such familiarity breeds contempt? Just joshing. Today children complain if they have to share a bedroom with 1 sibling and are unprepared for college dorm rooms.
Hi Todd... there is a trend to going back to "living small". Maybe this is where we are heading!
Don't forget Todd, you probably cut down the trees and built the house yourself too. There wasn't much call for Realtors then either.
Ah, those were the days. Can't you just picture yourself separating the stove wood from the rattlesnakes?
Hi Todd - I have read the same reports as Steve(comment #6) regarding the trends in housing and going "small". In my market, much of the inventory in certain neighborhoods is older(early 1900s) with smaller or non-existent closets, rooms that no longer reflect today's lifestyle.... It is amazing what you can get used to if you have to/want to. Thanks for the photo --- as others have stated we have much to be grateful
KOA (Kampgrounds Of America) makes a lot of money on these! $70 a night in my area! Just don't forget your bathing suit for when it gets hot :)
Todd, what? Each child didn't have a room of his or her own? Love this photo.
Todd,
There's a lot to be said for the old days - better in many ways. :)
Steve
It's unfortunate that some kids have forgotten how to play without a gaming system. There is something to be said for simpler times.
Yes, I do think medicine has gotten a whole lot better, but as for family, schools and just general life??? Not so sure I wouldn't mind living back then.
Todd....great shot. There was one a little like that on the farm I grew up on. Hope you have a great day!
It is very crazy how things have changed for sure! I thought it was bad that my dad grew up on a farm with 7 brothers and sisters in a 3 bed 1 bath house... I always wondered how they could deal with one little tiny bathroom but i guess one is better than none. (in the house you pictured the kids couldn't get very far from your nurf gun.. just a thought)
Todd - I remember when I was a kid all we had was Atari for a video game. I spent almost all my free time riding my bike, fishing and playing hockey. It seems like now you can't get kids to go outside they just want to stay in all day.
Todd ...It's bigger than the cabin I stayed in Alaska.....But thank God for the shelter !!!
Todd, we have all these great "new fangled" things which are supposed to make our lives "easier." Makes you wonder, eh?
