Ice Trees

As many of you are aware, we are experiencing freezing temps here in Northeast Florida, including the beaches, and this is not the norm for us.

We had a very cold winter last year, and I lost about half of my hibiscus hedge, which was 7 feet tall - and they are pretty cold hardy, but with 3 or 4 days last year with freezing temps at the beach, they were impossible to cover.

One of the ways some people, particularly citrus farmers, protect their plants is to water them prior to the freeze so ice forms all over the plant, which actually helps protect the plant from freeze.

Locally, someone did just that with their tree/shrub plant, not sure exactly what kind of plant, but I had to take a picture of it:

I do remember those scenes from when I lived in the citrus belt in FL. We will be seeing the real thing today as a wintery mix will be heading our way later today...

I hope that trick works!  The selection of hibiscus plants this summer in Texas was scarce because of the winter in Florida last year.

It's an interesting December for us, that is for certain. I heard last year was our coldest winter in about 30 years, and I have heard this winter will be worse....not looking forward to that necessarily, but all of life is a cycle! Stay warm everyone!

Carol,

Having moved from Buffalo 33 years ago to Baltimore and now in Ocala for 5 years; your ice trees brings back too many mememories of ice storms especially in Baltimore.  When the whole state looks like that and you are losing power, its no longer "pretty"

But thanks for sharing.  I somehow feel warmer. lol

Carol - Do you remember when it snowed in Jacksonville back in 1989? That was very interesting when that happened.

Nice picture but a bad image for Florida. You may need to build a greenhouse!

 Happy Holidays!

Robert - I moved here from NJ in 1990, so I missed the "Great Snow" of 1989. I hear bridges were shut down, and it was a real issue to get around Jacksonville!

Carol I love the photo however when I see a freeze in Florida all I can think of is that my food bill will be going up.  Yes a freeze in Florida affects us all.

I also feel for the farmers, so much has to be done to try and contain the damage.
