News broke today that the Lighthouse for the Blind is moving its manufacturing division to Baton Rouge from Mississippi. This is great news on many levels for the job sector in Baton Rouge.
Its estimated that this relocation will generate around 100 manufacturing and related jobs and should create somewhere north of $4 million in tax revenues over the next ten years. While a number of these new jobs will be slotted for blind individuals, a significant number of these positions will go to sighted employees.
Lighthouse produces paper products for use by the US Military.
Its exciting for Baton Rouge anytime there is a jobs relocation announcement, but I think this is a particularly great one. This announcement will allow some number of blind individuals an opportunity to have a job, make a living and integrate more fully into our community.....I'm not sure that it gets much better than that!
