Books and graduation hatMassachusetts Census  Produces Some Interesting Results

According to an article in the Boston Globe today, the latest results from the Massachusetts Census Bureau paint a revealing picture of The Commonwealth.

The five year survey, not surprisingly, has Massachusetts with the highest number of college graduates of all of the states in the country.  We do, of course, put great stock in our learning institutions and Massachusetts is famous for them.

Other facts and figures that came out of the study were not so obvious.  It seems we also have:

  • The oldest homes in the country.
  • The longest commute time for work (at an average of 27 minutes.)
  • The oldest population - at an average age of 38.5. (How many residents were ½ a year old?)
  • A growing minority population.
  • Women in this state are marrying at age 29 - the third oldest in the country.
  • Men are marrying at 30 - also the third oldest in the nation.
  • In most of our marriages both spouses are working.
  • We have the fifth highest median property values in the nation.

The property value figure is only behind Hawaii, Washington D. C., California and New Jersey.

I don't know about you but I find these types of studies to be fascinating. And, I would, actually, like to know more.

For instance, what percentage of the Massachusetts population is in the business of real estate?

They didn't include that figure.

Ken:

Yes, where do you suppose I would find that figure? (I don't think the Massachusetts Census takers care about it.)

Claudette - Our MLS shows a look-up of all agents or offices. It would be a ton of work but you can extract from that possibly? If you MLS shows that sort of look-up.

Claudette - do you really want to know the percentage of real estate agents in Mass??  If my town were representative of my state, it would be about 50%!  I'm exaggerating, but it's really a large number.
