Texans like to brag about being the biggest and the best in a lot of things. I know first-hand as I lived in Texas for over 40 years before relocating to Louisiana. Now Forbes has confirmed that Texas is number 1 in shopping.
Forbes evaluated the largest metropolitan areas and their retailing statistics to come up with the Forbes top 25 listing. They looked at the combination of shopping options, ease and affordability...and Texas came up with 5 cities in the top 25!
They aggregated up the total mall square footage for the largest cities in the US and Texas accounted for about 25% of the total - or nearly 88,000,000 square feet of shopping. Included in that list is the Houston Galleria - which is Texas' largest mall with about 2,500,000 square feet.
Here are the top Texas cities and how they stack up within the Top 25 US cities:
- #1 Houston - with 16,938 retail locations and 54 shopping centers
- #2 Dallas - with 19,069 retail locations and 28 shopping centers
- #8 San Antonio - with 5,913 retail locations and 41 shopping centers
- #12 Austin - with 5,347 retail locations and 31 shopping centers
- #21 El Paso - with 2,334 retail locations and 13 shopping centers
