My father, Don Fuertges, died 5 years ago while teaching on the West Point Campus in New York.  We had planned a trip to visit him there, and he suffered a heart attack one week prior to our trip.  Last summer we were finally able to make it back to New York and I went to the West Point campus to see where my Dad spent the last semesters of his life.  I visited the Chapel where the cadets and officers had held a memorial service for him and on that rainy summer day... I captured this photo of the Battle Monument located on Trophy Point on the West Point  USMA grounds.

Battle Monument,  a large doric column standing 46 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter, is reputed to be the largest column of polished granite in the Western Hemisphere. It  is located on Trophy Point at the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY. Designed by Stanford White, it was dedicated on the 30th of May, 1897 by surviving Civil War veterans. The monument was financed by monthly contributions from the pay of the officers and soldiers of the regular army.  Inscribed on the cannons surrounding the column are the names of 2,230 Union officers and soldiers from the Civil War.

I have always wanted to share this photo and it is special to me because it represents the sadness I felt for the loss of my father, but also the respect and love I still feel for him.  The Battle Monument stands for the loss of so many other fathers, brothers, and husbands and has been a tribute to them for over 100 years.
