They recently opened a restaurant in the Arbor Walk shopping area in north Austin (which appears to be a chain, but this is the first one I have seen), and my wife and I kept making fun of the name:

Once, when she was shopping in the area with our kids, she couldn't help but laugh because two ladies exited the restaurant with noticably large potbellies themselves.  Despite this "endorsement", we decided to give it a try with our kids in tow.

Overall, I would give it a decent review.  The food quality was good and it is inexpensive ($4.19/sandwich), but they are not really very kid friendly (i.e. no kids menu at all).  They made our kids PB&J, but my daughter balked because of the sheer size of the sandwich and the fact that it was toasted.  They re-made her sandwich and allowed us to keep the first one as well.

As a minor negative, the people working behind the counter seemed impatient when we were there, like they didn't really want to explain how things worked.  It wasn't particularly busy, because we went in the mid-afternoon.  They just appeared to be kind of unhappy, frankly.

They also have an ice cream bar, but we didn't partake that day, so I can't speak on this.

My wife made a couple of funny remarks after we left.  She mentioned that maybe we should try out "Fat Backs" next, or perhaps "Cellulite's".  That is one of the reasons I married her - she makes me laugh!

Thanks for reading my "review". :)

Jason, I've seen a Potbelly Sandwich Works locally here in Virginia, but never stopped in.  I think I was actually a bit turned off by the name.

Ok, I am going to come out to Austin and check this place out.  You guys have some very colorful names for restaurants.

BRIAN - That doesn't surprise me - I decided to go mainly so that I could blog about it.  The food portions were decent and inexpensive.  I would probably go again if I was going to lunch with a friend, and not with the whole family.

I don't understand how any restaurant that isn't a white table cloth, high end dinner restaurant NOT have a kids menu?  Come on!

Howdy Jason

I have not seen one here in NH. I like the name. Maybe the owner has a potbelly pig. And thats how the name came about for it.

Have a good one

GINGER - I always feel exactly the same.  Who doesn't have a kids' menu these days?  What gives?  The other pet peeve is when they have a kids' menu, but no kids' cup (with a lid).

DALE - There is a small picture of a potbellied stove on the sign, but who knows where they came up with it?  Overall, it seems like it might drive more people away than attract them.  Thanks very much for commenting!

We have a few. Good sandwiches.

I like the Italian. It has a spicey sauce

They usually have a solo act strumming a guitar and belting out a few tunes during the lunch hour.

That is a great name. It really sticks and stands out. I could see it alienating mabye a few folks.

TOM - I actually had the Italian when we went.  I did notice a very tiny stage with a microphone, but we must have come at the wrong time of day for that.  The stage was literally so small that a chair would barely fit on it.

DAN - It is a memorable name, but I'm not sure if it is for the right reasons. However, they did get me in the door, didn't they?

ALAN - It was a good week.  We are in San Antonio now for the weekend (Pam's high school reunion).  Maybe we can get together next week sometime.

I like to at least try those crazy places.  I ate at a restaurant in San Antonio called DICK'S, were all the waiters were real Dicks to you!   Mean if fact...and we had to eat on brown paper napkins and they threw stuff at us.  It was actually really fun, my point being, I only really went because of the name. Great posting, keep up the good work

JANNA - I have to tell you three funny things about your comments.  I am actually in San Antonio right now for my wife's high school reunion weekend.  When I first met my wife, it was on the dance floor of an Austin club and she was wearing (I kid you not) a Dick's t-shirt.  Additionally, I spent my 21st birthday celebrating there.  I am well-versed in this place, and we may even swing by while we are in town.  Thanks for commenting and bringing back some memories.

Hey Jason,

This is a blast from the past.  We had a Potbelly in Brea, CA - but that was many years ago.  Probably not the same company.  Our Potbelly had the World's Best pastrami sandwiches!  Wish I could find a place like that today.  :)
